STORY: An aging and intoxicated Shakespearean actor Rexford Wellington is led home by a policeman. When his niece Ginger, a street-wise eight year old from a New York slum, hears he is being arrested, she throws a rock through a window to create a diversion so that Uncle Rex can run away. Later, as they act out a scene from Romeo and Juliet on the roof, Ginger and her uncle are interrupted by a probation officer looking for, Janet Taylor, Ginger's real name. Ginger, who is habitually truant form school, is warned by the officer, that she can be taken away from her uncle because of his drinking and lack of means of support. Ginger promises to stay in school and says that Uncle Rex just got a job in a movie. Rex takes a job hawking in front of a movie theater, but is arrested for fighting with the manager. When he is fined thirty dollars or thirty days, Ginger steals from local merchants to pay the fine, but is caught. At Ginger's court appearance, Mrs. Elizabeth Parker, a society matron writing a book on children, volunteers to take custody of her. At the Parker Estate, Ginger meets Hamilton Parker, a well-dressed and well-mannered child with faultless grammar. She calls him "Blubber." Mr. Daniel Parker demands that Mrs. Parker send Ginger back. Ginger mistakes Daniel for a servant and they become friends. Mrs. Parker tells Ginger that Rex is not her real uncle, but a friend of her parents who reared her after they died. Daniel bails Rex out of jail. Seeing Ginger's affection for Daniel and realizing that the Parkers could give her things that he never could, Daniel sneaks off. Dazed and walking in the rain, Rex is hit by a truckand subsequently suffers from aphasia. Four months later Ginger has acquired some refinement, while Hamilton "Blubber" has picked up Ginger's slang. On Thanksgiving, Hamilton and Ginger go on an errand with the chauffeur to her old neighborhood. Ginger sees Butch, an older kid that she reviles with her dog, they argue about the dog's rightful owner. Protecting Ginger, Hamilton beats up Butch. Uncle Rex makes his way back to his boardinghouse, where he imagines Ginger reciting lines with him. Back at the Parker home, Ginger overhears Mrs. Parker saying derogatory things about her and Rex. Ginger insults Mrs. Parker and leaves. She and Hamilton return to the boarding house and find Uncle Rex asleep. After Daniel rebukes his wife, they also go to the boardinghouse. Uncle Rex awakens and hugs Ginger, who apologizes to Mrs. Parker. Mrs. Parker tells her that she realizes that her notions were wrong.
