STORY: Little Orvie, yearns for nothing more in life than a dog, but his mother Clara worries about her furniture and forbids his wish. In spite of this, Orvie adopts a dog for the day and has nothing but problems. A ball batted through a neighbor's window by another boy is retrieved by "Tiger" then delivered to Orvie. Troubles mount when Cousin Freddie throws a ball through the grocer's window and again the dog returns the ball to Orvie. He returns home to an angry neighbor, the grocer and a confused mother. Clara orders him to take the dog to the pound, but when he learns that the dog will be electrocuted, Orvie takes the dog back home and blackmails Corbina, the cook, into keeping Tiger by threatening to expose her secret marriage. Having rid himself of Tiger, Orvie meets Patsy Balliser, who has four puppies to give away. After giving away three of the pups, Orvie keeps the last one Ralphie, home with him and hids him in the basement. The dog gets sick and Orvie finds a bottle of poison, blaming his parents, Orvie decides to run away and move to the country where he can have a dog. On the way he stops at Patsy's house and leaves the ailing Ralphie, and Mrs. Balliser notifies the Stones, who retrieve their son and promise him he can have a dozen dogs if he wants. Their promise turns to prophesy when Orvie and Ralphie return home and Corbina returns Tiger, who has given birth to a liter of pups.
