STORY: In 1871, at New England's Plumfield School for Boys, Professor Bhaer and his wife Jo, lovingly instruct and care for all their boys. Then comes Nat, a street orphan, sent to the school by a benefactor, who quickly becomes part of the happy farmhouse school. Nat becomes a friend and partner of Tommy Bangs, saving money by collecting and selling eggs. Nat runs into Dan, a friend from his street days, and takes him to Plumfield. Bhaer resists allowing Dan to stay, believing him to be a bad influence on the other boys, but Jo talks him into letting the boy stay. Dan soon earns a reputation as a trouble maker, but promises to do better and stays out of trouble for several months. Then one of Tommy's dollar bills is discovered missing and Dan is suspected. Dan is falsely accused and sent to a reformatory by the Professor, but runs away after being flogged by the headmaster. Jack eventually confesses and Professor Bhaer feels guilty and unsuccessfully searches for Dan. At a gloomy Thanksgiving dinner, Bhaer's son Teddy, finds Dan in the barn hiding under a haystack, and brings him inside to a happy and tearful reunion.
