STORY: When a moving van drives by carrying a shiny new toy fire engine, the gang follows the truck to it's destination and greets their new neighbor, a rich kid who couldn't be less interested in them. They try to bribe him for a ride in the fire engine, but nothing works. When Jane comes along, however, she bypasses Wally to admire the beautiful car and is immediately invited for a ride. To show up the snooty new neighbor, Wally boasts that the gang's got a fire engine too....one that will hold everyone. The gang sets to work building such a vehicle, appropriating wheels, lumber, a hose, a ladder and other essentials from the neighborhood at large. The finished product is unwieldy but impressive - to everyone but the insufferable rich kid, who calls it "a piece of junk" and discourages Jane from riding in it. Instead, he challenges the gang to race down a steep hill. Before long, the gang's brakes fail, and the rich kid gets nervous from following so close behind. He crashes against the sidewalk, sending his fair damsel tumbling onto the lawn, while the gang careens down the hill, along a sidewalk, and into a thick hedge (which removes their clothing as they passed through) for a triumphant victory.
Note: Jackie Taylor, inherited the role and her "name," from Jane Withers, who was to play the part. My father (Tommy) said that going down the hill was "scary." He also said that he would have remained with the gang, but his mother thought he could do better as a feature player in other movies.
