STORY: Adam Blythe, a poor but superb medical student at Clifton University, is shocked when his fiancée, Ann Clement, announces that she will marry wealthy Jerry Grattan. Two years later a disillusioned Adam begins drinking and as an intern looses a patient while intoxicated. Seventeen years later Adam, now a hobo, runs into a former fraternity roommate Morton Talbot, at a gas station and discovers he is now a millionaire. Adam tells Morton his story and, Morton suggests that for "old time's sake," they attend the Clifton commencement. There Morton introduces Adam as a preeminent surgeon from Europe, as he toys with Dean Todd about donating funds to the medical school. Adam spies a familiar looking co-ed talking to her fiancé and learns that she is Ann's daughter June. The next day Morton who wants Adam hired at Clifton, pushes Todd to allow Adam to perform a delicate operation. Adam uses impressive poise and skill during the operation and convinces Todd to make him head of the school's new research center, which Morton is funding. Later June, who has been spending time with Adam, proclaims her love for him. When Jerry tells Ann about June's infatuation, Ann becomes overcome with jealousy. Equally jealous, Jerry threatens to tell Adam that he is June's father, if Ann pursues an affair. Then, shocking everyone, Adam declares at a banquet, that he is an "imposter" and tells the story of his downfall and life as a drunken small-town veterinarian. Adam tries to leave, but is stopped by a still infatuated June. Adam convinces her to return to her fiancé, and is then joined by Ann, who has been followed by Jerry. Insane with jealousy, Jerry shoots at Ann, but Adam intercepts the bullet. Adam wipes off the fingerprints from the gun and announces that he has committed suicide. Adam receives a dedication on Morton's new research center.
