STORY: In 1925, Hungarian immigrant Paul Krisa makes an honest living as a bank cashier, content to support his devoted wife Anna and four children on a meager salary. Paul's boss Franz sends him to New York to deliver $100,000 cash to a client Sandor Nemsetti. Varno, a spy at the bank, notifies a crook Reginald L. Morten of Paul's arrival at the Hotel Empress. Morten's moll, Mary Brown, poses as a journalist and seduces Paul into drinking until he passes out. The next morning, Paul realizes he has been robbed and accuses Mary, but she pretends not to know him. Morten's men then knock him out and put him on the railroad tracks. While picking his pockets, Paul awakes and tries to defend himself, and an oncoming train kills the thug. Finding his inscribed watch, the police believe the body is Paul's and the papers report a hero trying to defend his trust. Because Mary had him shave his beard and he is badly beaten, he looks like a hobo and no one believes he is Paul Krisa. He wanders the streets of New York for years not knowing who he really is. Meanwhile, his son Paul Jr. grows up to be a world class violinist. When Paul Jr. makes his New York debut, Paul is in the audience and cries when he plays his favorite piece. Paul follows his son back home to Pennsylvania. He watches his family visit his grave and follows them home, watching them sing Christmas carols though the window. When a policeman tries to arrest him, Paul Jr. and Anna invite the stranger inside, but he declines and walks away into the snowy night.
