Freeze, Turkey
The Best Underrated Cops-And-Robbers Flicks
Today, when someone says "cops and robbers" when referring to movies, we think of the recent "Action Adventure" offerings starring an ex-football hero or a washed-up muscle guy.  Remember when these movies were cool?  Acutally -- Thankfully -- there are still some being made today that don't involve repetitive expolsions or heaving breasts.  Check these out

Part One:  The Cops

Serpico, 1973

Should be required viewing for all Police Academy graduates.   Helluva story about what happens when
a beat cop moves up the ranks and refuses to "go dirty", like the rest of his colleagues.
Al Pacino was nominated for the Academy Award and won the Golden Globe for his performance.

The Private Eyes, 1980

Hey, they don't all have to be serious.  Don Knotts and Tim Conway in a spoof
that's one part "Clue", one part "Hound Of The Baskervilles", and two parts Peter Sellers.
You'll catch it on WTBS, usually at three or four in the morning.

Dog Day Afternoon, 1975
One of the TOP THREE MOVIES OF ALL TIME (on your host's list)

Once again, Al Pacino brings us a brilliant performance as a frustrated bank robber
who's after cash for his lover's sex change. . .and the media frenzy he creates.
This one's in the "Cops" section because it's as much about their handling of the situation
as the situation itself -- and Charles Durning's performance is equal to that of Pacino's.
Directed by Sidney Lumet, this film stands the test of time and will be around forever.
Go rent it NOW.

Part Two:  The Robbers

A Fish Called Wanda, 1988

This one's got everything - millions of dollars worth of diamonds, a bumbling barrister,
a stuttering thief with a penchant for all things four-legged (and no-legged), a completely
original view of many of the world's philosophies, and Jamie Lee Curtis.  Kevin Kline's
boot sniffing scene is worth the $3.00 rental alone.

Midnight Express, 1978

A disturbing enough story without the knowledge that it's all true.
Caught smuggling hashish out of Turkey, he is made an example of by the government.
He can wait the appeals process, die in prison. . .or risk the Midnight Express.
Alan Parker's best work (makes The Wall look like the student film that it was).

Nuns On The Run, 1990

Hey, I've got a thing for British Comedy, okay?
Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane as gansters on the lam. . .posing
as women of the cloth.  All the standard cross-dressing jokes are there,
with enough original comedy to make up for it.

I guess the moral of this story is that you've got a good shot of impressing me with a cops-and-robbers type
film if you hire Al Pacino or a member of Monty Python.  The comedies are great party movies -- good for the
impromptu sleep-over when the only thing left at Blockbuster are 43 copies of Titanic.   But check out the
dramas, too -- they're good for you.
