Civil War - Underground Railroad Quilt

This quilt was our next project in hand piecing. Unlike the first project, this one involved piecing curves and much more intricate piecing. It also involved applique as well as piecing. Both techniques originated in prehistoric times.

This quilt is a sampler of blocks that were purported to have been used as signals in the Underground Railroad during the US Civil War. Some of the block patterns themselves, date back much farther. Almost half the blocks in this quilt can be dated as far back as the late 1600's.
