1100-1500 - a book of French poems or lays mentions an early patchwork bedcover. The poem, "La Lai del Desire" states, "The bed was prepared of which the quilt was of a check=board pattern of two sorts of silk cloth, well-made and rich." The last line states, "Around appears the new flower." indicating that perhaps there is an appliqued floral border. A checkboard pattern would be of either woven or patchwork origin. (Colby, Patchwork, p22.)
1500's - Panelled wall hangings in Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire. Made by the Countess of Shrewsbury, these hangings claim that some of the fabrics used came originally from church vestments that were no longer used by the church. Illustrating the use of applied work in creating design elements. (Arnold page unknown)
Late 1500's - Queen Elizabeth's Petticoat - Queen Elizabeth had a quilted petticoat made from, "white sarceonet and was quilted all over with a small threade of venice golde and silke of colours with flowers and feathers ebroidered with Carnacion watchet and grene silke with three borders rounde about embroidered with pauncies roses and pillers." (Arnold, p303)
