Ivory Statue

(Picture from Colby, Quilting, p 4)

3400 BC - a small carved ivory statue of the king of the Egyptian First Dynasty. It was found in the temple of Osiris at Abydos.

The king is wearing a cloak or mantle which has carved patterns reminiscent of a quilted textile. While this is a carved statue, it is carved in such a way that the fabric appears to have been hanging as though it were stiff, like it had several layers. the quilting pattern is a lozenge or diamond pattern which is still commonly found today.
