1400 - Milanese Ivory Statue

The statue shows the holy family on the flight into Egypt. Joseph is wearing a coat quilted all over in a simple cross diamond pattern. The detail in which the entire piece is carved indicates that it is a faithful representation of a real garment. The garment hangs in soft folds indicating that it is not thickly padded but it is padded. It also should in indicative of the dress of the common man of simple means at the the time.
