"In Japan, as in many other cultures there is sound evidence for the early use of quilting in armor. This is well illustrated by this campaign vest, which dates fromthe late 16th century and is both functional and highly decorative. It belonged to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a famous ruler who lived between 1537 and 1598, and it was probably made from prequilt4ed cotton brought from india by a British trader. Its existence suggests that armor was a recognized application of quilting in Japan at that time. The back of the vest is decorated with applique depicting a stylized pawlonia flower." (page 18)
