" The earliest known example of dated patchwork, discovered in England in 2000. It is worked mainly in 4.5 inch (12 cm) squares, with the date 1718 and the initials 'E.H. pieced into one of the squares. The fabrics are predominantly silk, although some pieces ofwool velvet are also included. The coverlet is worked in the style known as English patchwork, where the patches are basted over paper then oversewn together, and prefigured the development of patchwork as a technique in itself (where the pattern is achieved solely by the combination of colors and shapes). In earlier works, the patchwork serves merely as a background for applique and embroidery." (page 12)
