2.01 : "Ambition In The Blood (aka Protean Man)

Air date : November 1, 1997

A charming and prolific serial killer escapes from prison and resumes his killing spree when he arrives in New York, but his seemingly random crimes baffle Sam, who struggles to predict his next move while she battles and Atlanta cop who accuses her of murdering a women. Sam tries to prove to police that her stalker, Jack of all Trades, actually murdered the victim. Meanwhile, the team rallies around Bailey, as he fights for his life after being shot by his wayward daughter.

2.02 : "Power Corrupts"

Air date : December 6, 1997

Sam and the VCTF must unravel a series of murders in Chicago where the killer obsessively cleans and displays the victims as a signpost of their corruption or immorality. At the same time, the team must wrangle with a contentious local cop (guest star Richard Roundtree) who resents their interference. Elsewhere, a recovering Bailey can’t rest until he finds his runaway daughter. Jon Cypher ("Major Dad") also guest-stars as Judge MacGruder.

2.03 : "Primal Scream"

Air date : November 8, 1997

During a series of brutal murders, Sam and the task force discover that all the crimes occur during rainstorms that apparently trigger a violent response in the killer. Meanwhile, serial killer Jack of All Trades befriends a recently paroled prisoner and vows to remake her- by teaching her how own murderous modus operandi.

2.04 : "It Cuts Both Ways"

Air date: November 15, 1997

A frustrated Sam drastically rethinks her theories of Jack of All Trades' mindset when the serial killer appears to alter his method of slaying his unlucky victims, but Sam is unaware that Jack has a new protege.

2.05 : "Second Best"

Air date: November 22, 1997

A devious bomber (guest star Christopher John Fields) with a twisted genius for mayhem stymies Sam and the team, forcing the VCTF to call in demolitions expert Nick "Coop" Cooper (A Martinez), who matches wits in a deadly game with the madman - and tries to suppress his own romantic feelings for Sam.

2.06 : "Old Aquaintance"

Air date: December 13, 1997

As Christmas nears, Sam reconnects with several college chums at a "Big Chill"-like reunion that quickly heats up when one friend is found murdered -- and Sam and her fellow pals are all suspects. Meanwhile, computer wizard George agrees to help in a risky undercover assignment to target financial transfer thieves who are trying to blackmail him. Also, serial slayer Jill begins to kill without any prompting from her murderous mentor, Jack of All Trades. Peggy McCay (NBC's "Days of Our Lives") guest- stars.

2.07 : "Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Quick"

Air date : January 3, 1998

The VCTF corners Jack, but he escapes---despite being shot by Sam. And then there's the murder of her college classmates in North Carolina to solve. 2.08 : "Victims Of Victims"

Air date : January 10, 1998

An unsolved murder in North Carolina bears an eerie resemblance to a series of ritualistic slayings 40 years ago in the same area. Sam and the VCTF are brought in to investigate - but an undetected bit of evidence from the old case points to a man who committed suicide in prison before the most recent killing. Elsewhere, on the run, a wounded Jack of All Trades seeks sanctuary with his wealthy mother in her mansion; Sam's disapproving mother-in-law (guest star and Emmy winner Michael Learned) arrives to visit her granddaughter Chloe; and Grace needs emergency attention while perusing a rural crime scene.

2.09 : "Birthright"

Air date : January 17, 1998

Sam and the VCTF race against time to find the last in a series of men who were born within days of each other in the same hospital, all of whom have been targeted by a twisted man who bears a grudge because of an unfortunate accident he suffered earlier. Also, Sam confronts her duplicitous mother-in-law (guest star Michael Learned, "The Waltons") about her parental skills, and a recovering Jack of All Trades has a surprise for his mother (guest star and Oscar winner Louise Fletcher, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest").

2.10 : "Dying To Live"

Air date : January 31, 1998

A mercy killer (of sorts) is harvesting organs for transplantation purposes---then killing the "donors." Meanwhile, Behar (Michael Gaston) informs Bailey that he's the target of an internal investigation; and Chloe tells Sam that someone has been taking pictures of her in school. Carter: Michael Zelniker. Handleman: James Handy. Sacks:Nicholas Hormann. Mrs. Driscoll: Wendy Davis.

2.11 : "Ties That Bind"

Air date : February 7, 1998

A break-in at an Atlanta mansion resembles break-ins in Birmingham, Ala., and Charlotte, N.C., but in this one the occupants were murdered---then ritually stabbed. Meanwhile, Sam's mother-in-law (Michael Learned) proceeds with her effort to gain custody of Chloe; and Frances tells Bailey that she's been sleeping with John Grant. Handleman: James Handy. Fat Cat: Ron Taylor. Dr. Mason: Kymberly Newberry. Andrew Jung: Will Yun Lee. Zach: Allan Grifka. Maureen Hewes: Rhonda Dotson.

2.12 : "Shoot To Kill"

Air date : March 7, 1998

In Ohio, a sniper targets drivers stuck in rush-hour traffic jams, and with each shooting he positions himself further away from his victim. He also leaves a "message": a replica of an ancient Greek urn. Meanwhile, Bailey's having nightmares that were triggered by the sniper case; and in Atlanta, John learns that a close friend has been responsible for spreading lies which romantically link him with Francis.

2.13 : "Bloodlust"

Air date : March 14, 1998

When a series of battered young men are found dead in Boston, Sam and the VCTF discover that someone is recruiting desperate, unsuspecting athletes to provide fodder for clandestine fights-to-the-death to provide chilling entertainment for a select audience. However, the team cannot draw close enough to the organiser unless one of its own can infiltrate the operation.

2.14 : "Every 5 minutes"

Air date : March 21, 1998

Guest-star, Larry Wilcox portrays a veteran peace officer who helps FBI profiler Sam Waters and the Violent Crimes Task Force investigate an increasing series of sexual assault crimes in the Florida panhandle. The episode marks the first time that "Profiler" has addressed the issue of serial rape.

2.15 : "Breaking Point"

Air date : March 28, 1998

SAM HAS 24 HOURS TO SAVE HER FRIEND ANGEL'S LIFE -- A distraught Sam blames herself when her best friend, Angel, is kidnapped by a desperate father (guest star Bruce Weitz, "Hill Street Blues") who threatens to kill her in 24 hours unless his son (guest star Seth Peterson), a convicted murderer, is freed from prison -- forcing the VCTF to move fast to find the allegedly "real" slayers.

2.16 : "Lethal Obsession"

Air date : April 4, 1998

DEMENTED KIDNAPPER WOULD KILL FOR 15 MINUTES OF FAME -- Sam and the VCTF investigate the "prime-time kidnapper," a madman who has a pathological need for media attention and projects his mania onto an attractive but terrified local TV anchorwoman (guest star Anna Galvin) whom he wants to exclusively cover the prisoner exchanges. Elsewhere, Sam worries about what's really behind her daughter Chloe's reluctance to perform in the children's ballet, and the murderous Jack of All Trades makes plans for his imprisoned Jill. Bruce McCarty guest-stars.

2.17 : "Cycle of Violence"

Air date : April 11, 1998

LIVE BY THE SWORD, DIE BY THE SWORD -- When a series of abusive adults are found slain -- reportedly by a vigilante wielding a flaming sword -- Sam and the VCTF find a possible link in an old comic book line featuring a mythical, vengeful heroine, the lurid creation from the addled mind of a reclusive writer (guest star Karen Black, Oscar nominee for "Five Easy Pieces"). Meanwhile, Sam confronts an imprisoned Jill and solicits her help in identifying her murderous mentor, Jack of All Trades, before he finds Jill.

2.18: "Die Beautiful"

Air date : May 2, 1998

When a teenage beauty queen (guest star Caitlin Mowrey) is found slain, Sam and the VCTF first suspect her parents but the investigation points to a voyeuristic serial killer (guest star Lyle Kanouse) whose peculiar modus operandi matches the murder scene evidence, but there s one problem -- their prime suspect was in prison during the crime. On the home front, Bailey's budding romance with Ellen Behar (guest star Colette Kilroy) makes his resentful daughter Frances more than a little jealous. Clarence Williams III ( The Mod Squad ) guest-stars as a local police chief.

2.19/2.20 : "Root of All Evil" (SEASON FINALE)

Air date : May 9, 1998

Explosions rock an Atlanta pharmaceutical plant's parking lot, killing 24 people. Then a hooded figure (Gary Frank) forces a Missouri businessman---who exported the company's diluted drugs---to "confess" his sins. Meanwhile, Jack schemes to get to the imprisoned Jill; Sam has an unsatisfying meeting (her first in 10 years) with her father (Lawrence Pressman); and Bailey's daughter Frances wins a college scholarship. Trouble is, it's for an out-of-town school, and the terms of her probation require that she remain in Atlanta. Cook: James Morrison. Brandywine: James Sutorius.
