WHAT WAS ROCK SQUAD?

First, a little story about Rock Squad. This was during 1987-1995 the only official Def Leppard fan club at the time. If you would send about 15 UK Pounds, Rock Squad would send you four full-color newsletters, a number of so-called "Leplines" (up-to-date information bulletins), a membership card, a couple of full-color pictures, access to Def Leppard merchandise and some more Def Leppard stuff.

Now, there are four types of Def Leppard fans. Let's say they all wrote a letter to Rock Squad and asked for a membership application form:

  1. The ones who never got anything, not even an application form.
  2. The ones who did get an application form, returned it and never got anything worth mentioning after that.
  3. The ones who did get an application form, returned it and actually received something.
  4. The ones who did get an application form, returned it and became a full member.
Group number 4 is a small group. Some fans actually did get everything that was promised.
But fact is, that most fans just didn't get what they wanted. The other three groups are much bigger. STATED FACT: ROCK SQUAD DIDN'T GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY ASKED FOR AND PAID FOR (some exceptions).

Unfortunately (?), Rock Squad doesn't exist anymore so nothing can be done about it. No action can be taken against an organization that doesn't exist. But there's more to the story. Read on....

WHAT IS INFO ACTIVE?

In 1996 Rock Squad stopped and became defunct. A new fan club was in the making. I believe (though I can not prove it) that Rock Squad changed to another fan club due to legal reasons -- no one would be able to sue Rock Squad or take action anymore since Rock Squad didn't exist anymore.

In 1996, lots of fans got a letter. Who? Well, all the people that were in Rock Squad's database. About everyone who belonged to the groups mentioned in the previous part of this story. Let's assume that it's everyone who ever contacted Rock Squad.

This letter promises a lot to future members. An introductary letter, a set of merchandise vouchers, six 8" x 8" photos, a Christmas card, a membership pass, the opportunity to order Def Leppard memorabilia, a poster, 4 issues of the full color magazine "Def Zone", monthly bulletins called "In Touch" and access to merchandise. They also tell about their plans for an official Info Active website. Anyways, to subscribe, they wanted the following information:

Your money. If you were in the UK or Europe, you would have to pay around 18 UK Pounds (approximately 25 US Dollars). So, lots of people tried again. It didn't really work with Rock Squad, maybe it would work this time. Fans returned the application form and their money.... just to find out nothing happened. AGAIN!

Some fans actually got something. Most of 'em didn't. Was Info Active screwing up again? Watch this. Info Active claims the following:

  1. Everyone will get what they paid for. Sooner or later.
  2. People who used the credit card payment method, don't have the right to complain if they didn't get anything yet, cause we didn't charge money from their account.
  3. The reason that we didn't send out membership packs to the fans is because THE BAND instructed Info Active not to cash ANY FANS' money until the club has the goods for the membership pack. This membership pack is not ready to send out yet.
  4. Application forms were sent to everybody who asked for it.
So what do we, the fans, think of that?
  1. We're tired of waiting. We want the stuff. We've been waiting for years. Literally.
  2. We're not complaining that our money was cashed. We're complaining that it takes such a damn long time.
  3. Membership packs not ready? You've had more than one and a half year to finish them now. And don't put the blame at the band. YOU screw up.
  4. So? We don't want application forms, we want DEF LEPPARD things!
I think that says it all. We want what you promised us. We've waited long enough. Time's up.

Another detail. What about this statement from Info Active (from The Def Leppard FAQ):

"Some fans who wrote to the Rock Squad state that they never even got an application form from the Squad. This could be correct. When the band decided to close the Rock Squad, they tried to sent every person on file free colour mags and another membership pack. Since it was closing down, sending out application forms was pointless. This would just have compounded any problems and hindered the closing of the club. All the letters were saved and Rock Squad were asked to pass them over to a new organisation, Info Active, when they closed in July 1996. These fans were then sent Info Active forms."

Nice try. Sending application forms is step one, our compliments. But we want more than that. We don't want an explanation why it took so long before we got application forms, we want an explanation why it takes so long before the application forms are actually processed.

Final detail: Rock Squad was run by a "friend" of the band (especially Joe), called JOHN BURKE. Info Active is run by that same guy. Coincidence? Think again. Read on.....

DOES DEF LEPPARD KNOW?

In 1992, Joe was confronted on MTV Europe with the problems with Rock Squad. He then said it was indeed going the wrong way and he mentioned a "downward spiral", but that Rock Squad would get their things together in the near future.

I've heard stories that nowadays, Joe gets annoyed when you talk to him about the Info Active problems. I've heard he once said "I'm sick of those fans who complain to ME! It's not MY fault!". I've heard I've heard also that Joe doesn't want to face the facts and refuses to believe that John Burke/Info Active is doing a bad job. Many people have tried to let the band know, but somehow it looks that Joe (or other band members maybe) find the truth too hard to face.

Another story I've heard is that the band actually believes that there's a web page online. Of course, there isn't. If it's true what I've heard, John Burke is simply TELLING LIES to the band.

Note to all the fans who have contact with Malvin Mortimer, Def Leppard's friend and tour manager: DO NOT INVOLVE MALVIN IN THIS MATTER. For obvious reasons, he CAN'T be and doesn't WANT to be involved. His opinion is not relevant.
