It was a picture perfect day in
Hazzard County. The birds were singing with not a cloud in the sky.
Little did Bo and Luke Duke know what lie in wait a little further down
the road?
Bo and Luke were giving
the General Lee his morning work out, and Bo was driving. He looked
over at Luke and said “Dang, whatever you and Cooter did to the General
keep doing it he has never sounded better!” Luke said, “Thanks cousin,
not a bad job if I don’t say so myself.” Up ahead Luke spotted a
car broken down on the side of the road. They decided to pull over
and check it out. Bo got out of the General and walked over to the
car, he peeked inside the window and saw a lady with her back to him.
He began, “Can I help…” She turned around and he instantly recognized her.
“Nancy Lou?! Nancy Lou Davenport it is you!” She saw Bo’s face and smiled
sweetly and said, “Well if it ain’t Bo Duke himself.” “What are you
doing here in Hazzard?” Bo asked. Nancy Lou looked at him with sad
eyes and said, “Long story Bo, but I have to go find daddy right away I’ll
explain it all later.” Bo smiled, and said “No problem Nancy Lou
we’ll just hook your car to the General Lee and get you to your daddy’s
garage right away!” With that, Bo heard a baby crying in the
back seat; he looked in the back seat, startled, Bo asked, “What’s that?”
“Bo, I want you to meet my son Christopher Cooteris Davenport I call him
CC for short.” Bo’s jaw dropped in shock, “YOUR SON? How When?” A
smile came over Nancy’s face as she replied, “When was 6 months ago and
how is like this Bo…” Bo said “Never mind, I KNOW how!” The both
exploded in laughter. He motioned for Luke to pull the General Lee
in front of Nancy Lou’s car and then the hitched her car to the General
loaded Nancy Lou and Christopher up & headed for Cooter’s Garage.
As the boys, CC, and
Nancy Lou pulled up in front of Cooter’s in the General Lee, they saw Cooter’s
feet sticking out from under the car he was working on so Nancy Lou picked
up CC and walked inside as Bo and Luke followed her. She quietly
walked over to where Cooter was working and said, “Excuse me sir” Cooter
jumped and hit his head on the underside of the car as he pushed himself
out, “Shoot fire and save box matches that smarted what the…?” Cooter looked
up and saw the lady and said, “Nancy Lou? Is that you baby?” She
smiled at her father and said “Yeah daddy it’s me.” And the father and
daughter embraced. It had been five years since Cooter had seen his daughter
and then a tear came to his eye. He had not noticed the baby in her arms
so she looked at her daddy with a sweet smile and said, “There’s someone
I’d like u to meet daddy.” Nancy Lou handed CC to Cooter and said,
“I am proud to introduce to you your grandson Christopher Cooteris Davenport
CC for short.” Cooter’s eyes widened as he said “My grandson?” About
that time, the boys came in and Bo said, “Y’all I hate to break up this
reunion, but we still have to get Nancy Lou’s fixed.” Cooter handed
CC back to Nancy Lou then wiped the tears of joy away and walked over to
his daughter’s car. He raised the hood and took a look. “Baby
I’m afraid you have a busted water pump and carburetor” “I’m gonna
have to order the parts from Hotlanta” Nancy Lou’s eyes filled with fear
and Cooter knew something was wrong. “ Daddy, I have to tell you
something but not here, it’s to public, is there anywhere we can go in
private?” Luke said, “Sure, Bo and me would be happy to radio Uncle
Jesse and tell him to set 3 extra places for supper.” “Well, let’s do it
then.” Bo replied reaching for the CB. Bo called Jesse on the CB
and explained what was happening, then, Cooter, Nancy Lou, and little CC
got into his truck and followed the boys back to the farm.
Jesse and Daisy was sitting
in the living room when the General and Cooter’s truck pulled in front
of the Duke farm. Everyone walked in the door and greeted Jesse and
Daisy. Cooter was carrying CC in his arms and said, “Uncle Jesse,
Daisy, I would like you to meet my grandson Christopher Cooteris Davenport,
but we call him CC for short.” Jesse and daisy walked over to Cooter
and CC and said at the same time, “Well congratulations Cooter you have
a very handsome grandson you must be very proud of him.” Cooter thanked
Jesse and Daisy as they walked over to Nancy Lou and hugged her.
After the Dukes, Cooter and Nancy Lou ate supper. Cooter asked, “Alright
Nancy Lou what’s going on? Why are you so scared?” Nancy Lou looked
at her daddy with tears in her eyes as she told the story, “My ex husband
Rick Turner was involved in a drug dealing ring in Atlanta, a man came
to the house one night and got into a fight over money. Rick and
the man argued for a while, then Rick pulled a gun on the man, and shot
and killed him. He figured out that I saw everything that happened and
went to the police and he was later arrested. I just got word that he escaped
from prison and is looking for me, so I took CC and ran off and we have
been running ever since” she cried, “Oh daddy I’m so scared I just know
he’s gonna find me and kill me too.” Cooter embraced his daughter
then wiped her eyes with his handkerchief and said, “Don’t you worry honey,
the Dukes and me will look out for you!” The Dukes all nodded in
agreement with their lifelong friend. Cooter and Nancy Lou thanked
the Dukes for the dinner and their help and then Cooter took Nancy Lou
and CC to his truck and they went home for the night.
Meanwhile, a blue car sped
towards Hazzard County, it was Nancy Lou’s ex husband Rick, he said to
no one in particular, “Nancy Lou, so help me God I will find you!
I’m gonna make you pay for sending me to prison!” As Rick roared
into Hazzard, the first place he headed for was Cooter’s Garage to see
if he could find any sign of Nancy Lou and CC. He went in and tore
the place apart to find any clues to their whereabouts. A few hours
later, Cooter and Nancy Lou walked in to the garage and saw the mess and
Nancy Lou said, “Rick has been here looking for me and CC.” Cooter
looked at her and said, “When I get my hands on that boy, I’m going to
give him a whooping he’ll never forget!”
Later on that night, The
Dukes, Cooter, Nancy Lou, and CC went to the Boars Nest for a night on
the town. They were laughing, talking, and drinking when the door
flew open, a man wearing torn jeans, and a denim work shirt. Nancy
Lou looked up and shrieked, “Oh my God, its Rick!” Rick spotted her
and Ran over to where she was sitting and grabbed her. “Well, well,
Nancy Lou, I’ve waited a long time for this! You’re coming with me!”
Cooter Jumped up and said, “Get your damned hands off my daughter!” Cooter
punched Rick in the jaw knocking him to the ground. Rick rushed Cooter
and knocked the wind out him. About that time Rosco came rushing
out of the office and said “Alright, FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE! Just freeze it
right there! What’s going on out here?” Before anyone could
answer, Rick grabbed CC and ran out the door to his car. Nancy Lou
looked up yelled, “My Baby!” The Dukes, Cooter, and Nancy Lou ran
out to the General Lee and sped after them with Rosco right on their tails.
The General Lee sped after Rick. In a few minutes they hear the siren on
Rosco’s patrol car with a voice saying “Alright you Duke boys, pull it
over there!” Luke picked up the CB and said, “Come On Rosco we ain’t
got time for your games now, me and Bo are trying to get Cooter’s grandson
back, so either lend us a hand or get out of our way!” Luke looked
at Bo and said, “hit it cousin!” Bo put the pedal to the metal and
the General took off like a shot. Rosco kept pursuing them when Bo
said, “Cousin, I hate to tell you but the bridge is out up ahead.”
Luke replied, “Well, we only have one choice then, Hang on y’all!”
The General Lee jumped the creek. Luke asked, “Did we lose him?”
in which Bo replied, “Yep, you guessed it cousin, he’s in the Hazzard car
wash!” They stopped to make sure Rosco was Ok and looked around.
“Well y’all thanks to Rosco it looks like we lost them, lets go back to
the farm and regroup and start out in the morning” Bo said with a disgusted
look on his face. The boys, Cooter and Nancy Lou headed back to the
Duke farm to get a plan for the next morning. Jesse said, “Cooter,
I think you and Nancy Lou should stay here tonight where its safe.”
Cooter patted him on the back and said, “Thanks Uncle Jesse we’d appreciate
that a lot!” The all got ready for bed and got ready for the big
search.
The next morning they all got up and
Luke Laid out the plan. “Me and Bo will head north in the General. Uncle
Jesse you take the pick up and head east. Daisy you take the west route
in Dixie, and Cooter take the south road in the tow truck” They nodded
their head and Uncle Jesse said, “Are we gonna stand here all day yapping
or are we gonna get going?” They headed out the door and Bo said, Don’t
worry y’all we’ll find CC!” They all took their assigned routes and
started looking. “Shepherd this is the Lost Sheep do u copy? Any
sign of them?” Asked Luke, “Jesse replied, “No Luke, not yet.”
“Daisy, you?” “Sorry Luke, No trace here either” “Crazy C?” “That’s
a big negatory Luke” “10-4 everybody” Luke replied. Bo and
Luke drove a little further when something caught Bo’s eye. He looked
and sure enough he saw Rick’s car over by the sawmill on the edge of Hazzard
swamp. “Hey Cousin we found him!” Bo pulled the General behind the
mill and radioed the others to meet them there. They got out and
started scouting the place out; it was a rickety little wooden building
that sat right on top of the edge of the swamp. The walls and roof of the
building were showing its age, they had turned a Grey color from the many
years that had passed since its last use and the different seasons had
taken its toll on the wood. They were moldy looking and pieces of it were
slowly rotting away. Luke spotted a piece of hole up in the roof and he
pointed it out to Bo. Bo also noticed a broken window on the East
Side of the mill. There were two supply sheds, which was in about
the same shape as the mill itself. Bo said, “Dang Luke, Rick could
be hiding anywhere!” About that time, the others drove up, and Luke
said, “Ok, here’s the plan, Me and Bo are going to check out the mill while
you guys check out the sheds.” Nancy Lou grabbed Luke by the collar
and said, “Forget it Luke, that is MY son in there with that monster!
I’m going with you rather YOU like it or not is that CLEAR?” Luke gently
put his hands on her shoulders and whispers “But Nancy Lou…” Nancy Lou
screamed, “But Nancy Lou nothing! I am not going to stand idly by while
you and Bo goes in there. Rick and I were married and I know him better
then you two do.” Luke's jaw dropped about a foot as he said, "Damn that
woman has spunk!" Everyone chuckled slightly, and Bo looked up. "OK
here's the plan, me and Luke are going to go in through that hole in the
roof. We want u to slip in through the broken window and hide till
we signal you." "Ok Bo." Cooter turned to his daughter and smiled
at her as he took her hand. "You be careful in there Nancy Lou, you hear
me?" “I will daddy, I promise!”
Bo helped Nancy Lou into the window
where she hid behind some old supply crates. The boys quietly climbed up
the ladder to the roof and dropped down through the hole onto the hayloft.
As they entered the mill the odors of rotting wood, the mildew from the
swamp nearby, and just a tiny bit of sawdust filled the air! It was
dark, but a tiny stream of light emanating from the cracks in the rotten
wood helped the boys be able to see. The boys knelt behind a bale
of hay as they scanned the building for any sign of Rick and CC.
Finally Bo looked up with a smile, “Luke over in the corner!” “Yep
there he is cousin.” Rick was holding CC and talking to him, then
he put him down in a pile of hay that he had made into a cradle for his
son. “Let’s take a look at our new home.” and started walking the
other way. Nancy Lou saw this and went to get him. Luke Looked
down, “Oh Lord.” “What is it Luke?” Bo looked down and saw
what Nancy Lou was doing. “Is she nuts?” Just about the time
she reached to pick CC up a board snapped, Rick heard it and turned around.
“I knew you’d show up sooner or later Nancy Lou, which will be your last
mistake!” He pulled his gun, cocked it and aimed it at Nancy Lou.
“Oh no you don’t!” a voice cried as the boys came crashing down on him.
Bo fought to knock the gun out of hand. Luke ran over to Nancy Lou,
“You alright?” “Yeah Luke I’m Ok!” Luke had gotten them out
safely. Cooter hugged his daughter and grandson. “Thank God you’re
alright!” Jesse looked around and said, “Where’s Bo?” He’s
still inside.” “Well get in there and help him!” “Yes sir!” As Luke headed
back inside a gunshot rang out loudly. “BO?” Luke ran inside to see his
cousin standing over Rick’s body, killed by a gunshot wound to the heart.
“Bo, you alright? You scared the hell out of us!” “I’m alright,
can’t say the same for ol’ Rick here though!” They both walked out
of the mill. Jesse said, “I ought to turn u over my knee a whoop
ya both! You scared me out of 20 years of my life!” They looked at
Nancy Lou relieved to see her safe. “What happened guys?” Bo and
Luke looked down at the ground, not exactly sure how to break the news
to her. "Nancy Lou, I fought with Rick for the gun and...it went off. I'm
sorry but he's dead." A look of peace and relief comes across Nancy Lou's
face, she looks don at CC and a feeling of sorrow fills her heart knowing
he won't have his daddy around to watch him grow up. Luke walked
over to the General and picked up the CB to call Rosco “Luke Duke calling
Sheriff Rosco, get the coroner to the old saw mill Rick Turner is dead,
Luke out.” The coroner loaded Rick’s body into the hearse as the
told the whole story to Rosco. “It was clearly self defense, no charges
will be filed.” As he got into his patrol car he turned to Nancy
Lou, “Sorry about your loss.” “Thanks Rosco.” He got
in his car and drove away. “Let’s go home, I don’t know about y’all, but
I have had enough excitement for one day!” Bo said as he smiled.
“Amen!” the crowd agreed.
On the way back to the farm Nancy Lou
started crying. “What’s wrong Nancy Lou?” “I’m scared daddy,
I have nothing left in Atlanta what will I do?” “Nancy Lou, you have
friends and family here in Hazzard who love you very much. As long
as I’m alive you have a job at the garage and a roof over your head.”
“Thank you daddy, I love you.” “I love you too baby!” They
continued home to celebrate CC’s safe return.
