Brief Character History: Cole never knew his father, Armando Deschanel. He discovered he had been kidnapped as a baby and that his mother, whom he thought had abandoned him, was Elaine Stevens.
Cole's grandmother gave the jewels to Del Douglas in exchange for his assistance in kidnapping Cole after his birth. He came to Sunset Beach at his grandmother's urging to recapture the Deschanel jewels, now willed by Del Douglas to his mistress, Olivia Richards.
Cole fell in love with Caitlin Richards much to the disappointment of her father. Gregory, ever possessive of his family, has attempted several schemes to break them up. During a short break up, Cole saw Olivia, Caitlin's mother, wearing an expensive gem and had an affair with her to gain information about the Deschanel jewels. Cole was shocked to discover later that Olivia was Caitlin's mother. Olivia became pregnant and is unsure whether the baby is Cole's or her husband's.
Gregory has even hired a private detective to find dirt on Cole's past. Cole and Olivia are both scared that their affair will come to light as they both have much to lose.
Cole married Caitlin and they had a child that Caitlin did not give birth to. Olivia is the real mother. Annie drugged Olivia and took her baby to give to Caitlin. Cole may be the father of Olivia's baby. When Cole met his father, A.J., for the first time, he made it clear that he wanted nothing to do with him. Cole found out that A.J. had another son, Leo Deschanel.
On a charity cruise, Cole reunited with Philip and Francesca Vargas. He knew them from his past, when he was a jewel theif. Francesca was Cole's first love. Aboard the ship, Philip was killed by Cole but in self defense. Everyone thought Cole had died when he fell down a shaft. He was found floating in the ocean and A.J. jumped from a helicopter into the ocean to save his son.
Francesca blackmailed Cole to help her steal jewels from Bernie Nielson. Cole couldn't refuse so he helped her and he was caught by Olivia, but she didn't tell anyone. Olivia and Gregory are concerned for Caitlin, because they both think Cole is cheating on Caitlin with Francesca. Cole wants nothing to do with Francesca, but she keeps getting him involved in her schemes.
