Enter Grigory, who demands the money owed him by Yelena's late husband. Furious that she will not pay him, Grigory begins to attack the pettiness of women and Yelena in particular. Incensed, Yelena counterattacks accusing all men of being unfaithful and shallow. As the argument heats up Grigory challenges Yelena to a duel.... She accepts.
Although primarily a comedy, Chekhov's play underscores and examines the very rigid codes of behavior within late nineteenth century Russian society - and the role of women in particular.
