Dead Poets Society follows a group of boys as they stumble through their school years, encountering many problems, facing their nightmarish fears and realising their dreams.
Mr Keating, a new teacher at Welton, arrives on the scene in a wave of controversy. The older teachers, who believe in traditional methods of teaching and the boys are there to study, and nothing else, not even to follow and chase their dreams. From Mr Keating, the boys learn that nothing is certain, and that everything they do comes from the heart - that they are all capable of accomplishing whatever it is they want, and that they shouldn't be condemned for trying.
Neil Perry soon discovers a book of Mr Keating's which uncovers the legend of a secret and outlawed poetry club headed by Mr Keating when he himself had attended Welton, its first page spelling out a decree to be recited at the beginning of every meeting:
Suck the marrow out of life...
