Jude Law reprises the title role first made famous by Michael Caine (who won an Oscar for his portrayal) and makes it his own in this stylish remake. Alfie (Law), a self-aware British cad living in New York, falls in lust too easily and can't commit to one woman, leaving a string of heartache in his wake. When one of his many lovers gets pregnant and it appears he's finally smitten with a woman for good, Alfie begins to question his existence.
Summary from http://www.netflix.com
I haven't seen the original "Alfie" so I can't compare the two, but I liked this version. Alfie leads the empty, care-free lifestyle that's fun when you're young but eventually becomes pathetic (especially when your wang stops working). There are some nice moments when Alfie tries to put on a brave face while learning he's actually the loser in the relationships. I expected that, but I didn't expect the movie to end like it did. Regardless of how the original ended, I thought this one would have wimped out, but it didn't. Alfie recognized the emptiness of his lifestyle and wanted to change, but the women he cared for had other plans. The best moment was when Liz (Susan Sarandon) broke his heart. Like Alfie, I assumed he was her boy toy, but he learned a painful truth--that he had passed the boy toy age. Ouch. --Bill Alward, March 20, 2005
