A heartwarming adaptation of Elizabeth von Arnim's 1922 romantic comedy about four English women who run off to an Italian seaside castle for emotional revitalization. The theme is a familiar one to English literature (uptight Brits flee their rainy island to the Italian sun where they finally let loose, a little) and its done full justice here. Josie Lawrence, Miranda Richardson, Joan Plowright and Polly Walker comprise the foursome which makes the getaway, with Lawrence acting as their divine yet humble inspiration. Alfred Molina, Jim Broadbent and Michael Kitchen give wonderful support as the various men in the women's lives. Filmed in the actual villa in Portofino, Italy, where von Armin penned her book, the film lovingly re-creates the ambience of the era while telling its charming tale of four women who start off as unlikely traveling companions and wind up best of friends.
