Nell (Jodie Foster) is a woman who has been raised in isolation by her mother in rural North Carolina. When her mother is found dead by the boy who delivers groceries, Nell is discovered by the Sheriff and local country doctor. She appears incapable of caring for herself, so they contact a psychiatric institution for advice. This sets up the struggle between the uncaring institution and the humanitarian doctor for control of Nell's life. The problem is everyone but Nell are stock characters, and the story is completely predictable and boring. It even degenerates into a ridiculous courtroom scene at the end. Horrible.
