John Candy gives possibly his best performance in this low-keyed comedy-drama written and directed by Columbus and produced by John Hughes. Candy, effectively underplaying his part, stars as a thirtysomething, single Chicago cop, still living at home with his mother, who falls in love with Ally Sheedy: only problem is he just can't break away from mom. In her first screen appearance in 20 years, Maureen O'Hara returns as Candy's feisty mother. Much credit goes to O'Hara for her solid portrayal of the basically unlikable, prejudiced and outspoken Rose; the actress never attempts to belittle or dilute the character, and creates a three-dimensional, totally complex woman.
