An aspiring young doctor, Robert Merivel, finds himself in the service of King Charles II and saves the life of someone close to the King. Merivel is invited to join the King's court and live the high life. That all changes when Merivel is ordered to marry his King's mistress in a phony marriage. Eventually, Merivel does the one thing he's not supposed to, and the King relieves him of his position and wealth. His fall from grace leaves him where he first started, and he rediscovers his love for true medicine
