Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey
Released 1993
Directed by Steven M. Martin
A fascinating chronicle of the life and times of Leon Theremin, the Russian-born genius who invented the first electronic musical instrument (which was adopted by Hollywood for use in movie soundtracks during the 1940s and 50s). Music history meets political and pop-culture history in this endlessly surprising documentary, more interesting for the material it offers than for the brilliance of its presentation. Comic highlight: a passionate if incoherent interview with Beach Boy Brian Wilson, who used the theremin on his hit record "Good Vibrations."
