Zero Effect

Released 1998
Stars Bill Pullman, Ben Stiller, Kim Dickens, Ryan O'Neal, Angela Featherstone
Directed by Jake Kasdan

Pullman is Daryl Zero, the world's greatest (and most eccentric) private detective, who never meets his clients, but sends emissary Stiller instead. O'Neal hires him to track down a blackmailer, but Pullman finds himself becoming emotionally involved with one of his suspects. Clever, original screenplay by first-time feature director Kasdan (son of Lawrence), but he shoots himself in the foot by deadening the pace and stretching things out too long. Rate this a near miss.
