It's a safe bet to say that there's never been a war movie like Saving Private Ryan, which already seems assured of earning a slew Oscar nominations. as well as an honored place in the pantheon of grand cinematic achievements. As the most collaborative of art forms, no film is created without a team effort, and what a team was assembled to make Private Ryan!

The man calling the shots behind the camera was Steven Spielberg, who already has a record five movies listed in the American Film Institute's "Top 100" listread the Mr. Showbiz interview with Mr. Spielberg to find out which movies he would rather have seen on the list in place of two of his own, then pay a visit to Scruffle's Steven Spielberg page to get a fan's-eye view of the wünder-direktor. The titular Private Ryan in the film is played by man-of-the-moment Matt Damon (if you haven't seen Al's Matt Damon Site, you don't know what you're missing!), but as we don't even meet him until more than an hour into the film's running time, the real star is Tom Hanks, who also fills the starring role at the excellent Mike's Tom Hanks Page.

As an actor, he's still a relatively fresh face to most people, but we predict that his role as a member of Hank's select squad will boost Edward Burns' profile significantly. At the simply named Edward Burns Site, the spotlight is as much on Burns' talents as a writer/director as it is on his acting ability.

While the story of Saving Private Ryan may be fiction, the film has been noted for its graphicly realistic depiction of the horrors of war. For the real-life tale of a World War II soldier, visit the remarkable Private Art Web site, where visitors are invited to read letters written by and sent from the European front over 50 years ago by Pvt. Arthur Pranger, along with new commentary from the veteran and his wife, Rose. The letters are posted on the same date they were written during the war, so return frequently to follow the unfolding tale.
