Elayna paced around her rooms in Corinth Castle, cursing herself under her breath. The Amazon queen had sent her here to present a trade petition to the king, but the wheels of progress turned slowly. Several of the king’s council members were aghast at the idea of trading with the Amazon nation, but slowly and surely, King Iphicles was wearing them down. Elayna was anxious to be on her way, and not simply because she felt so confined inside the stark edifice of the castle. Somewhere over the last few days, she had found herself becoming much too attracted to the handsome young King of Corinth.

"What an idiot I am," she muttered under her breath. "He’s a king. I’m an Amazon. There is no way in Tartarus there could be anything between us."

With a disgusted snarl, Elayna decided that what she needed was some fresh air to calm her burning senses and clear the cobwebs from her mind. Changing quickly into her riding outfit, a soft deerskin tunic that laced up the front, matching skirt, and knee-high brown leather boots, she grabbed her staff and headed out the door toward the stables.

Her horse had come up lame from throwing a shoe on the journey to Corinth, and although he seemed mostly healed, Elayna decided not to risk him. She’d make due with one of the king’s mounts. She smirked to herself at the terrified glances thrown her way by the stablehands as they brought her a dappled gray mare. People could be so stupid sometimes. Some of the stories she’d heard about the Amazons were too ridiculous to give credence to, but still people believed them. Amazons were not monsters; they were simply warriors. It was really amazing how some men could be so intimidated by a woman who was their equal in battle. They were always ready with a cutting remark as if with words they could reduce her in some way. Still, not all men were like that. Iphicles always treated her with gentle courtesy and much respect. He wasn’t one to be intimidated by a woman. With an irritated toss of her head, she realized that she was thinking about the king again. She really had to stop this!

Elayna guided the horse out of the courtyard and through the fields surrounding the castle. She headed for the sea and rode beside the waves for some distance. She stopped thinking and gave herself over to sensation: the warm air brushing against her skin, the cool spray of water on her face, the movement of the horse beneath her. She felt the tension that had been building up inside her body for days slowly slipping away.

At last she pulled away from the seashore and headed up into the countryside. This part of Corinth was so beautiful. The grass was rich green, and only a few trees dotted the horizon here and there. It was so different from the Amazon forest, but still very lovely. With a sigh, she decided that as soon as she returned to the castle, she would demand an answer to the petition. She couldn’t stay here any longer. She could barely think straight anymore. She’d never let a man do this to her before. The simplest solution? Leave.

So deep in her thoughts was she that she didn’t see the large snake in the path in front of her. The horse did, though. The mare immediately began to buck, terrified of the danger ahead. Elayna grabbed her staff, ready to strike out, but before she could do anything, she was thrown to the ground. The terrified horse immediately took off in the direction of Corinth.

"Damn," Elayna swore lightly. "I knew I should have brought my own horse. He would never have left me like this."

Luckily, the snake didn’t see her as a threat and continued on its merry way. Elayna struggled to her feet and immediately fell again. She had managed to twist her ankle in the fall.

"Wonderful," she muttered. "Thank the gods my sisters aren’t around. They would never let me live this one down."

She looked around and finally located her staff. She crawled over to it and used it to get to her feet. Well, at least she would be able to hobble back to Corinth. With a sinking feeling, she realized just how far from the castle she had ridden. And without telling anyone where she was going. How stupid could she be? Well, griping at herself wasn’t helping anything. She pushed off with her staff and began to limp slowly back toward Corinth.

She had no idea how far she had walked when she finally had to take a break. Her ankle was throbbing painfully, so she limped over to a rock and sat down. She eyed her foot warily. She knew she should take off her boot and examine her ankle to see how bad it was hurt, but she was afraid she’d never get it back on again, and she needed it to walk on this rough terrain. Elayna felt panic begin to rise in her, but she pushed it down firmly. She was an Amazon! She’d stayed in the forest at night by herself many times before. She could forage for food. She could defend herself. This was simply a different part of Greece. She would have to make due.

Suddenly, she cocked her head, listening. What was that sound? She looked in the direction of the sound, straining her eyes, and at last, she was able to make out the figure of a man on horseback, heading straight for her. She gripped her staff and forced herself to her feet, ignoring the pain that shot through her ankle. She couldn’t let this person know she was injured and vulnerable.

The man rode closer, and Elayna realized that it was none other than King Iphicles! The young king was the picture of royalty on his fine cream-colored stallion. Her battle-ready tension disappeared to be replaced by a tension of another kind. Part of her was thrilled to see the king, while another part cautioned her to be wary.

"Elayna!" Iphicles shouted when he reached her. He dismounted and was by her side in a heartbeat. "The horse came back without you. I was so worried. Are you all right?"

Elayna unconsciously backed up a few steps, trying to put some distance between herself and the king. "Kings shouldn’t be allowed to be so handsome," she thought. The sun glinted off his hair, turning the reddish-gold locks the color of fire. His face was so beautiful, yet at the same time, so strong. She ached to run her fingers down the firm line of his jaw and trace his soft, full lips. The loose fitting tunic and leather pants he wore couldn’t quite hide the taunt muscles in his body. Elayna felt a different kind of panic rising inside her this time, an almost unbearable heat coiling deep within her belly.

"Elayna?" Iphicles asked again. "Are you all right?"

"I’m fine," she said harshly, trying to dispel the thoughts that were whirling around in her brain. She took another step back away from him, but unfortunately, she put too much weight on her injured ankle, and with a strangled cry she went to her knees.

Iphicles was immediately by her side, holding her in his strong arms. "You’re hurt," he said with so much concern in his voice that Elayna felt her resolve to stay away from him weakening.

"There was a snake, and the horse threw me," she admitted grudgingly. "I hurt my ankle."

"Let’s take a look," he said, helping her up to sit on the rock again, then gently unlacing her boot.

Elayna tried to ignore the tingles that the touch of his fingertips caused on her skin as he removed her boot and examined her ankle, but it was impossible to do so. He had very large hands, but they touched her with such gentleness. She winced as he turned her foot slightly, but when he looked up at her with deep brown eyes full of apology and concern, all thoughts of the pain fled her mind.

"I don’t think it’s broken," he said at last, "but you shouldn’t be walking on it. Let’s get you back to Corinth and let my healer look at it."

Before she could protest, he swooped her up in his strong arms, carried her to his horse, and placed her in the saddle. He went back for her boot and staff, fastened them to the saddle, then mounted behind her. With a flick of the reins, he turned the horse, and they headed back toward Corinth.

At first, Elayna was so tense from being this close to Iphicles that she sat ramrod straight in the saddle, trying not to touch him any more than necessary. But at last, too exhausted from her long hike to stay in that uncomfortable position, she gave in and relaxed back against him. Gods, but he smelled good, part leather, but mostly just a natural male scent. She shut her eyes and almost guiltily let herself enjoy the feel of him against her back, his arm around her, his thighs against her legs, the light stir of his breath on her hair.

The wind turned a bit chilly, and unconsciously, Elayna snuggled back against Iphicles, not noticing his quick intake of breath as she did so. His arm tightened around her, though, and his breath began to come a bit ragged. Puzzled, she leaned her head back to look up into his face. His deep brown eyes gazed down at her with hooded lids, so much desire in their depths that her heart skipped a beat, then began to pound painfully.

"Iphicles?" she breathed a question, unsure of what she was seeing in his eyes. He answered her not with words, but with his mouth coming down upon hers with a fierce hunger. His lips moved over hers, consuming her, and she reached her arm up around his head, pulling him closer to her. His tongue sensually outlined her lips, then parted them to explore the warm cavity inside.

Iphicles moved his hand up from her waist to cup her breast. He lightly brushed her nipple, and it immediately hardened from the welcome attention. Impatiently, he loosed the reins to free both hands, trusting his horse to keep them on the right path, then unlaced her tunic to reach the treasure beneath.

Elayna’s back arched as his strong hands caressed both breasts gently, and when his fingers returned to her nipples, brushing them softly at first, then more insistently, a fire seemed to lace through her body straight to her core. His mouth became even more insistent on hers, and she could feel his manhood growing hard against her. The ache that had been a constant part of her lately heightened to new levels as his mouth and fingers worked their magic. The motion of the horse between her thighs only added to the sensation, and when one of his hands began to move down over her belly and between her thighs, she almost stopped breathing. His hand moved under her riding skirt, then unlaced her undergarment and moved it aside so that his fingers could touch her. Elayna moaned against his mouth as his questing fingers first parted her nether lips, then slid inside. He began moving his fingers in and out, in and out, stimulating the sensitive flesh until she was panting, and then his thumb reached up to brush the tiny bud above her opening. Elayna cried out as an orgasm tore through her body, leaving her shaking, but wanting more.

Iphicles helped her turn around to face him, taking care, even in his impatience, not to jar her injured ankle. Elayna fumbled with the opening of his leather pants, eager to see him, to touch him. At last, he was free, and she gasped at the size of him. She touched him reverently, then smiled softly at his sharp intake of breath. She began to stroke him, slowly at first, reveling in the silky feeling of the soft skin covering the steel hardness of his shaft, then faster, marveling as he grew even harder in her hand.

With an animal growl, Iphicles placed his hands underneath her and lifted her onto his lap. With one quick motion, he thrust into her deeply. Elayna threw back her head in ecstasy as he filled her completely. His mouth went to her neck, and she heard him whisper her name as he began to push up into her. She began to move on top of him, slowly at first, matching her rhythm to the rhythm of the horse underneath them, but he quickly grew impatient and grabbed her hips, stilling her motion but increasing his own. He pounded into her, faster, and faster, his movements no longer in time with the horse’s stride. The conflicting rhythms were enough to send her toward the edge again, and when his hand slipped back down between her legs to brush against that most sensitive spot once again, she lost all semblance of control. Her body began to contract around him, and the world seemed to explode. She cried his name as she orgasmed again and again, then whispered it as she felt him pulse within her and the heat of his seed warmed her deep inside.

Iphicles held her tightly, his face buried in her hair, his hands stroking her back as they both came down from the heights. "Elayna," he whispered in her ear. "My beautiful Amazon."

She smiled and pulled away from him to look into his handsome face. She gave into her fantasy and outlined his jaw with her finger, then brushed his full lips with her thumb. "My king," she said softly, her eyes sparkling with joy.

"I’m afraid it may be some time before I can convince my councilors to accept the trade agreement," he informed her with mock severity.

Elayna threw back her head and laughed with delight, then reached up to place a firm kiss on his luscious mouth. "Let them take all the time they want," she said softly. "I’m in no hurry to go home."
