This film is one of the most romantic movies I have ever seen .
The story is simple: a young girl falls in love with a poor garage mechanic. Unfortunately, the boy has to go to do his military service, and the girl is pushed by her mother to marry a diamond merchant when she discovers that she is pergnant.
The story may not be new (don't forget that film is shot in 1962), but the use of colours and images is unique. The whole film is filled with beautiful people , beautiful buildings and beautiful clothes (even a poor mechanic wears shirts in vivid colours).
But what is so special about this film is that all the actors and actresses do not read out their lines , they sing them out. All the songs are beautifully written . you will sing along even if you don't know French.
If you like My Fair Lady or The Sound of Music, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is another classic that you can't miss.
