Napalm Death @ Underworld, London 24 January 2005

Tonight's gig is more a showcase than your regular Napalm gig. Opening the show are Maroon, who I'd seen before and been impressed with, however having just arrived back in London after about 30 hours on planes and in airports, due to sleep requirements I unfortunately missed them.
When the gods of grind, now whittled down to a 4 piece, take the stage , what they play is pretty much the new album (entitled "The Code is Red, Long Live the Code") in it's entirety, as well as a few classics and 4 punk covers, paying tribute to Discharge and Agnostic Front among others. Thankfully being a 4 piece does not compromise the band's sound, it is as heavy and brutal as we've come to expect over the years. Classics included in the set include "Suffer the Children", as well as material from "Scum" and "Utopia Banished".
Being the socially conscious spokespeople that they are, singer Barney Greenway pays tribute to the many people who have died and suffered as a result of the tsunami disaster, a touching tribute. Unneccessary and misguided however is a comment he makes about the "suffering of the Palestinians", however as this is a gig review I shall not get into that now. On the bright side again, a highlight of the evening is when Jeff Walker of Carcass fame joins the band on stage, truly an enjoyable moment. Finishing off with "Nazi Punks Fuck Off", the mighty Napalm show again the brutality that has become their trademark, and that this brutality is still entirely relevant in today's metal world.
