Casualities of Water

Janet smiled at her next patient "How are you today?" Sam smiled and pulled herself onto the infirmary bed. "Fine. How about you?" Janet grabbed a pair of gloves "Great, Cassie and I are going to the zoo tomorrow, she can't wait!". Sam picked up the blanket and fiddled with the corner "Sam? Something on your mind?". She looked up at her friend "Well, I don't think it's serious but I’ve been getting nauseous and-" Sam jumped of the bed and ran to the nearest sink. Janet followed her friend and rubbed her back until she was finished "Take a deep breath" Sam nodded and drew in a breath.

Dr Frasier led Sam back over to the bed and helped her lie down "You just rest and I’m going to do a few tests". Sam opened her eyes "What's wrong?". A shrug was her reply and her friend pulled her gloves back on "Could be anything, I just want to be sure". The tests started and Sam felt herself drift off. Sam snuck behind Daniel and placed her hands over his glasses. Daniel turned around and pulled her hands down gently "Hey there" Sam couldn't stop smiling and didn't try to stop. "What's up?" Sam pushed his glasses back onto his nose from where they had started to slip and then gripped his hands. "We're going to have a baby Daniel!" Daniel frowned "What?" Sam sighed but continued to smiled.

"I'm pregnant!" Daniel's face lit up and he started to babble "Oh my god...I can't believe it...when?...how?...Oh I know how!...wow!" Sam smiled back and looked down at her stomach. Daniel followed her gaze and he reached out "Come here" she let him pull her into a hug, he rested his head on her shoulder "We're going to have a baby. We're going to have a baby!". Sam let her excitement come out and she jumped in his arms "Yeah, a baby us!" Daniel pulled her tightly back into his arms and kissed her. Sam smiled into the kiss and replied. "I love you" Sam felt her heart stop, that happened every time he said that. And she loved it! "I love you too".

Feretti smiled as he entered the control booth and saw Daniel and Sam "Get a room you two!" Daniel finished the kiss and looked up. "What's wrong?" Feretti frowned at the excitement that filled his friends face. Daniel picked Sam up and walked over to him. He looked to Sam, who nodded and he turned back to Feretti "We're going to have a baby!" Feretti felt a smile fill his face and he pulled Daniel, who was still carrying Sam into a big hug. "That's great!". Feretti pulled back and looked at Sam who was staring up at Daniel. They'd always suited each other, and Feretti was just sooo happy, Daniel had had the roughest life and Sam needed someone like him. "When?" Daniel looked to Sam "Months, I’m barely in" Feretti smiled again "That's just soo great! Does the General know yet?". Daniel bit his lip and shook his head.

"Do now" they all turned and stared at the smiling General. "Sir!" Feretti quickly came to attention but the General waved him off "When were you two going to tell me?" Sam let Daniel put her on her feet but she let him wrap his arms around her waist and she lent back in his embrace. "Well sir-" "No need to be formal Samantha, I’m a friend right now" Sam nodded and rested her hands over Daniel's which were absently stroking her stomach "I just found out si-, sorry" The general nodded "I'm one of the first to know?". Daniel nodded "Yes sir, apart from Janet, myself and Feretti, you're one of the first" "Am I a god parent?" Both Sam and Daniel laughed "Sir! It's been five minutes since I found out!" the general patted Daniel on the shoulder.

"Well, I’d like to be kept in mind..." Sam nodded "Trust me, you will be sir". The general nodded "Just wanted to be sure" Daniel nodded "Don't worry about it sir I promi-". They were all cut off by the klaxon alarms. "Sir! We've got unauthorised gate access!" The general turned and looked out of the window, that looked down on the gate. "From where?" the tech shrugged and typed at the computer "Not a known address sir". "Get the iris closed, and guards down there" the general turned and walked quickly from the room to only god-knows-where. Daniel took hold of Sam's hand and peered down at the closed iris, which was bending slightly towards them. "That's not good!" Sam tightened her grip on his hand and bit her lip "What would be strong enough to bend titanium?".

Daniel shrugged "I don't want you to find out" he turned back to Sam, gripping her hand "Sam, I want you to get to the elevator, and get to the surface". Sam looked at his surprised "What about you?" and then glanced back down at the room below. "I'll follow in a minute" Sam shook her head "You're coming with me" Daniel sighed, and glanced around at the almost empty room "I'll find back and meet you up there, okay?" Sam nodded, "Okay" she turned to leave but turned back one last time and planted a big kiss on his lips. He grinned and turned to Feretti "Take her with you will you?" Feretti nodded and took Sam's other hand "See you up there". Daniel squeezed Sam's hand one last time and then let Feretti lead her to the door "I'm not a baby Daniel" Daniel smiled and shrugged "Maybe not, but you're my baby. Now go".

They both left and Daniel turned back to the gate. "Shit, that's gonna blow!" he grabbed the intercom "Get outta there!" the guards didn't hear a thing. Daniel hit the control panel "Why aren't you working?!". He sighed and tossed the intercom to the side and sprinted towards the stairs. Sam pulled away from Ferretti's grip that was on her arm "He should be following by now, I’m going back". Feretti razed his eyebrows "No way, I made a promise" Sam sighed and turned back the way they came "If Daniel's already up there, just tell him I lost you". Feretti sighed, she was just as stubborn as Daniel himself! "Okay, but be careful. He'll kill me if anything happened to you" Sam smiled and ran off. Feretti sighed and continued towards the elevators "Women!".

Daniel hit the door button and it slid open. He ran into the gate room and gestured towards the guards "Get outta here!" the guards turned back, just as a small spray of water squirted from the middle of the iris "Crap! Come on!". The guards sprang out of shock and sprinted towards the door, but not before the iris started to shattered. Sam ran back into the control room "Daniel!" she glanced around the empty room and sighed, then glanced to the gateroom. "Daniel!!" the iris started to shatter and Sam pressed her palms to the window. Watching as the guards ran from the room, and one lone figure tripped. "No, please, not Daniel" she felt tears start to roll onto her cheeks.

"Get up! Get up!" she banged desperately on the window, as the figure struggled to pulled itself up. Daniel tried to get his left foot back under his body but it shot pain back through it. "Shut the door!". The guards turned back as they skidded through into the corridor, one started back to help him. "No! Close the door!". They looked puzzled and then scared as the iris creaked and a puddle began to form beneath the ramp. Sam let out a small sob as the guards regretfully closed the gate room door. "No, get him out".

Jack ran into the control room just as the iris shattered, and but not before seeing the figure lying on the ground, with sandy blond hair "Danny...". The iris let out a loud bang and the torrent of water being held behind it, gushed out. Daniel braced himself as the water hit him full on and he was thrown towards the wall beneath the large control room window. He felt the water swirl and start to drag him under. "No no no no no..." For the first time, Jack noticed Sam. She was leaning against the window, sobbing her heart out. "Sam..." he pulled her from the scene and onto his chest.

"He'll be all right. You know our Danny, nine lives" Jack looked down to where water was still gushing out from the gate, and then finally, it rose above the gate, completely covering it. "Danny'll be all right, I know it" the control room was suddenly filled with personnel. General Hammond came over to the two and looked out of the window, to the scene below. "Good god..." he turned and looked to Jack, then to Sam. "Daniel...he wasn't..." Sam let out a small sob "He'll be okay, I...I..." the general gasped "Oh god know, he was down there?" Jack nodded and passed Sam to Janet Frasier. "Sir, we gotta get in there, get him out" the general nodded "How?" one of the tech's who had been listening cut in "There are access panel above the gate, that's how we got the gate in" Jack was off already, towards the elevator.

Janet sat Sam down and checked her temperature "Is she all right?" Janet looked up to General Hammond "She's in shock" he nodded, "Take her to a room". Janet helped Sam up and led her away. General Hammond looked back down at the water filled gate room "How could this have happened?!" a tech sighed "Don't know sir, but it has". The general quickly came to a decision "Get those hatches open and as many pumps as possible". Daniel was down there, and he was damned it he'd let their kid have no father.

Daniel felt darkness coming towards him, and he excepted it. He couldn't resist, it was to big. "Sam..." the word didn't come out, but they were there. "Sam!" he pulled himself away from the darkness "Sam!!" he reached out and grabbed at the surrounding water, every bone and inch of his body screamed at him. His ribs ached and screamed at him and his lungs were slowly running out of air. "S-Sam..." he reached out again, ignoring his pain and grabbed at the surface. Finally, his fingers reached fresh air. He kicked harder and his head broke through the surface. Breaking through was like breaking through glass. Daniel sucked in one breath, then another and looked around. The water level seemed not to be rising any more and sat at the steady level of just over the gate.

He could see the top of it from where he floated. Daniel slowly swam over to it and was finally able to cling onto the Naquada ring. Taking a deep breath, he felt his ribs ache back at him, his leg and collarbone matching the painful rhythm. General Hammond looked back at the water and did a double take when someone surfaced "He's alive!!" the whole room seemed to snap out of its depression and started moving at once, some measuring an estimate of water, other getting supplies together and others going to find the good doctor.

Janet looked up from where she'd managed to get Sam to rest as an airman ran in "Doctor, he's alive!" Sam was up in a flash, moving towards the door. "No Sam, you need to rest!" she turned back, fixing her friend with a sulky glare "No way!" Janet sighed, there was no way in hell that Sam'd sit back down so what was the point trying? "Get everyone out of the building, except for needed personnel" the tech nodded, hopping to it. Daniel gripped to the ring, holding onto it for life. "Sa...Sam" his teeth chattered from the cold and he rubbed at his face, pulling his hair away from his face. He coughed and felt a stab in his chest and drew in a deep breath "Oh...crap". Why was he always the one with the bad luck when it came to this sort of thing?

Jack yanked at the hatch one last time and it finally came loose, he dragged it to the side, and then peered down the hole. "Daniel!" it was almost pitch black, except for the small amount of light coming from the control room window. "Danny! You down there?!". Someone was calling his name. Daniel pushed away the cold and the pain and dragged his conscious back "Ja-Jack?". Jack felt a smile curl its way onto his lips "I'm here space monkey" a small laugh came from the blackness and Jack grinned "You all right kid?" a cough came back as his reply, then a shaky voice "Yea...yeah".

Sam entered the busy control room and watched as people worked away busily. She walked over to the window and looked down. There he was, there was 'her' Daniel. "Daniel..." a hand was laid on her shoulder, she turned and gave a weak smile to the General "He'll be all right" the General nodded "He's one hell of a tough kid to kill" Sam smiled, almost dreamily "I just love him so much" the General watched as her hand went absent mindedly to her stomach "I don't know what I’d do with out him..." the General quickly pulled one of his finest officers and friends into a fatherly hug "Luckily for you, you won't have to find out. And junior here-" he gestured to her stomach "-will have a wonderful father".

Sam sniffed and excepted the General's embrace "He will be a great dad, won't he?" the General nodded and rubbed his friends shoulder "I can just see him reading to them, and teaching them how to play games that Jack taught him" they both smiled, they were very little smiles but they were there. Both knew Daniel would be all right, he had to be. Daniel hugged himself tighter, trying to keep the warmth he had in his body. "How's Sam Jack?" Jack's voiced softened slightly "She's scared shit-less, if you don't mind that term. And she wants you out, and quickly" Daniel smiled to him self "That'd be right, that's my Sam" "I think she'd come down here and jump in herself if the doc hadn't of restrained her!".

Jack frowned when he got no reply "You right Danny?" "Yeah, bit cold" Jack nodded "You'll be out soon enough, don't worry" "I'm not. You should see me, I’m perfectly calm". Dr Frasier knelt beside Colonel O'neil and looked into the darkness "How's he doing?" Jack turned to her and sighed "Cold and I bet he's hurting a lot more than he's letting on" Janet nodded "We need someone down there. I’m not letting him be lifted out when he could be seriously injured" Jack nodded and glanced around at the busy people around him. "I need a wet suit and a first aid kit. Now!". Daniel heard a small splash of to his right "He-ll-o?" he tried to stop his teeth from chattering but nothing would help.

A figure swam towards him "It's just me Danny" Daniel drew in a relieved breath "Good, I don't think I could put up with a mutant sea monster to" Jack pulled himself next to his friend and grabbed the stargate "The doc doesn't want you moved before we know the injuries. I'm gonna check you over and see if your stable enough to be moved, okay?" Daniel nodded softly and Jack frowned at his pale features "You all right to do this?" he nodded again and Jack sighed "You're good at getting yourself into trouble, aren't you?" Daniel gave him a small smile "Yeah, guess so". Jack let the first aid kit float and turned his attention to his friend "Where does it hurt?" Daniel pointed weakly to his ribs "My ribs, bottom of my neck and left leg" Jack pulled out his walkie-talkie and hit the 'talk' button.

"You there Jack?" Janet listened once again for a reply and suddenly, there it was "Hey doc" she smiled "How is he?" "Ribs are shot, collarbone, and left leg, wouldn't be surprised if he had a concussion to watch a hippo" Janet looked to the general, who had come down from the control room "Doesn't sound to good" she kept her voice low because Sam had just entered "We can't move him". ***2 hours later*** Daniel felt his brain frizzing on his again "Wake up" Jack turned back to him and frowned "You right?" Daniel gave him a small nod and got a new grip on the gate, but let go to soon and started to sink.

Jack was after him in a minute and pulled him back up. Daniel sucked in a big breath, then another "Sorry..." Jack let himself float, pulling Daniel to rest on his chest. "Tis all right" he rubbed his hands up and down his friends cold arms as he started to shake again "It's going to be all right". Daniel nodded and looked up at Jack "I...look after Sam for me...and the baby" Jack frowned "Baby?" Daniel smiled, his face gave off a haunted look "Sam's gonna have a little me, look after them both. Please" Jack was about to nod when he realised what Daniel was saying. "Daniel! Dr Jackson, don't talk that way. You're not going anywhere!"

Daniel gave him the haunted smile again "Make sure she doesn't give it a really bad name, like...Jack" Jack bit his lip "Don't Danny, don't say any more" but Daniel carried on. Jack hated this, he'd had downed men ask things like this before, he'd let so many down, some of their family had moved away and he hadn't been able to look out for them. He was going to keep this one, he was going to keep this last request from his best friend. "Thanks for being my best friend, and for always being there. And please-" Daniel's body hunched slightly as another coughing fit ravaged his body "-please tell Teal'c he was a true friend..." another coughing fit.

Jack felt tears running down his face but made no move to wipe them away as they lay there, floating in the cold and very dark water. "And Jack...look after Sam for me...and tell her I love her...and Jack..." Jack leaned closer to hear his friend "...it was an honour being your friend" Daniel coughed again and then nothing. His chest just stopped, his eyes still open, staring at nothing. "No Daniel! You can't die! You hear me: You can't die!!" Jack frantically looked around for his talkie "Get the harness down here. NOW!" a voice came crackling back "We can't, it's to dangerous to move him" "Just do it!" Jack didn't say anything more, for Sam's sake. Just in case she was still up there and he had no doubts that she wouldn't be.

Jack grabbed the harness that was tossed down, he pulled himself up, dragging Daniel with him. The harness was like a large mat, Jack lay Daniel down and checked for any signs of life "Come on Danny, don't do this!" he started CPR and hoped that it wasn't to late. Dr Frasier watched as airmen grabbed the harness and pulled it away from the hatch, she ran forward and bent over Daniel and Jack. Jack was doing CPR and obviously having no luck. "Let me have a shot" Jack fell back, breathing hard. Janet took over the compression’s until the trolley came.

"Daniel!" Jack stood up and caught Sam just before she would have fallen beside Daniel, she was sobbing hysterically. Jack hated seeing his friend and team member like this. He pulled her away but she resisted "No! Daniel! Wake up!" she fell down beside him and started to pound on his chest "Wake up! Come on! Wake up! Please..." Jack felt his heart breaking all over again. And then he remembered Daniel's last words "Sam! Sam. Leave the doctor to" he pulled her up and dragged her away. Sam was kicking and screaming the whole way. Jack finally got Sam bedded down in the nearest office/room which was Daniel's and she very quickly fell asleep. Jack sat down at her feet and took a deep breath, burying his head in his hands he started to sob "God no. Not Daniel, anyone but Daniel. Why not me?"

He didn't know if Janet had been able to get Daniel breathing again. He wanted to check it out, but he felt absolutely no energy left in his body. He closed his eyes and leaned back towards the wall and soon fell into a deep, disturbed sleep. Feretti softly shook his friends shoulder "Colonel...Jack...wake up" Jack’s eyes fluttered open and he jerked up "Wha-" "Hey, take it easy. Don't wake up Sam" Jack looked from Feretti down to the sleeping Sam "Daniel?" Ferretti's face lit up "Breathing and currently living". Jack let out his breath that he hadn't realised he'd been holding "Thank god..." "Janet sent me to get you for a check up" Jack waved him off "I'm fine. Daniel, how is he? Are you sure he's really there?!". Feretti helped his friend up "Come down to the Infirmary and you can see for yourself".

Janet Frasier collapsed in a chair and closed her eyes. Daniel was as stable as he could be with four broken ribs, one minor punctured lung, bad concussion and one very much broken collar bone. They'd finally been able to restart his heart, lost him very briefly, twice, on the table and had finally gotten him bedded down. She once again counted her lucky stars. She looked back to her friend, who lay still on his bed "What am I going to do with you?". Jack entered Daniel's room and rushed to his friends side "Danny..." Janet sighed "Hey Jack" he turned to her "Janet" she pulled herself up and stood by his side "How's he doing?" "He's doing okay, considering"

Jack nodded and they both turned back to their friend "Will he be okay?" she smiled, for the first time since this whole thing had happened she was sure of something "Knowing Daniel...he'll be complaining in no time" Jack chuckled and squeezed Janet's hand "You're probably right you know" Janet squeezed his hand back "I'm always right". ***1 week coma and one month later*** Daniel smiled as Sam sat beside him "How you going?" she smiled "Fine". They both looked up as Jack, Janet, Teal'c and General Hammond entered. "Please, stay seated" they all sat and the meeting began. "The gateroom had now been fully pumped and completely emptied of water, there for, the sg teams are back on duty. Jack grinned, he'd been getting tired of chess games with Daniel, especially when he always lost.

Sam sighed, life was finally getting back to normal. She snatched up Daniel's hand and gave it a squeeze "Normal my ar- OW!" Daniel glared at Sam "What was that for?!" she flashed Daniel a smile "Nothing". The General smiled too "You kids have another week off, just until Daniel can be fully energised" he gave Daniel a quick wink and then turned back to the other team "And the rest of you should get some extra sleep and all be ready for your next mission". Jack was about to get up when Teal'c not so gently pulled him back down. The general's smile hadn't been removed from his face yet "Yes sir?". "I think Daniel and Sam have something they'd like to say..."

Daniel looked to Sam and razed his eyebrows, Sam nodded and he looked back up "Um, since I don't have any family, I’d like you guys to be it. We were going to ask the General to be the babies Grandfather, on my side" The general looked close to tears and Daniel smiled, then turned to Jack "We'd like you to be an uncle AND a godfather" Jack's smile widened "It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it. Anyway, who's gonna teach the kid games...other than chess" Daniel glared at Jack but then his face broke into a soft smile "And Teal'c, we'd like you to be his/her uncle". Teal'c looked very taken aback "I am sorry, but I must decline"

"What? Why?" Teal'c slouched over a little, like he was admitting defeat. "I have caused you both so much pain...I feel it is the right thing to do" Daniel sighed and leant over the table a little "Teal'c, that's stupid" But Teal'c looked stubborn "I am sorry". Jack cut in "Come on Teal'c, they asked, you really should except, it's the polite thing" Teal'c razed his eyebrows and then, after a long pause, he nodded "I accept". Both Daniel and Sam grinned "Great!". Everyone around the table was now smiling, happy at the outcome of the meeting. Everyone was about to leave when General Hammond cut back in "Anything else?". All of them turned back, looking at Daniel and Sam. Who looked just as confused as the others did.

"Um, like what sir?" the general gestured towards Daniel and Sam and then razed his eyebrows "You two..." Daniel finally caught on "Oh! I get ya!" he turned to Sam and grinned "I think what the General is getting at is...will we go the whole way?" Sam felt her cheeks redden "Why Dr Daniel Jackson, is that a proposal?" Daniel gripped both of her hands "I believe that is" Sam felt tears welling in her eyes and she tried to choke out some words but nothing came out so she nodded eagerly instead. Jack grinned "Great!". Sam squeezed Daniel's hands and then leapt into his arms, kissing him blindly. Daniel laughed and returned her kisses "If I had known you'd react like this, I would have asked a long time ago!" Sam pulled back and planted a big kiss on his forehead "I love you" Daniel sighed "Figured...".

At this point, Jack, Teal'c, and the General chose to leave. Leaving the two together. Sam pulled away from Daniel to catch her breath, she rested her forehead on his chest and breathed deeply. She smiled softly as Daniel laid his hands on her stomach "Should you be on missions?" Sam nodded into his chest "I'll be fine until a month or so before, then I’ll take my leave until the baby's born. Janet's already offered to look after the baby with Cass, during the day and any nights we're away. The General has suggested easing off when it is born, so we can both spend time with little baby Daniel" Daniel smiled and sighed "Everything is so perfect, the baby, the job...you" Sam sniffed and looked up "Give yourself some credit".

"What are we going to call it?" Daniel let out a small laugh "I think that's thinking a little too far ahead Sam" she nodded "Your probably right...after all we've got all the time in the world". Daniel smiled again and pulled her closer "You're absolutely right" Sam looked up at him and kissed him softly "When haven't I been?". They both turned back, still in each others embrace, looking down at the stargate, the object that had caused them both lots of pain and also brought them both together.
