THE FACTS.
Just 4 days after leaving Southampton, Titanic was already an amazing 1,000 miles into the north-Atlantic, travelling at 22 knots, covering 38ft per second.

Out of 2,207 passengers and crew members there were only enough lifeboats for 1,178 of them.

Only 708 people survived the tradegy.

Only 6 people who survived the sinking are alive today.

J Bruce Ismay is alleged to have told Captain E J Smith to break the Cross-Atlantic record, but Ismay has always denied the allegations.

Titanic sunk on April 15th 1912, 450 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada and 2 and a half miles below sea-level.

Douglas Spedden (seen in the movie, up on deck playing with a spinning top), boarded Titanic with his family and slept through the whole disaster. He escaped along with his family in lifeboat no. 3. He knew nothing of the sinking.

The body of Captain E J Smith has never been found. He was a master who went down with his ship.

The wealthiest man aboard, John Jacob Astor IV, helped his pregnant wife Madelaine into the eighth and last lifeboat, he asked if he could go with his wife, but was refused. He then ran back down to f-deck and released his beloved dog Kitty.

Band leader Wallace Hartley was hailed as a hero after news of his act aboard Titanic reached land. Hartley lead his band in song as chaos broke out aboard the ship. They played ragtime music until 2:10am, Hartley then dismissed his men, but returned to play one last hymn, Nearer My God To Thee. 8 mins later then ship and band disapeared below the waves.
