NJTA Tape Trains

Just what ARE tape trains?

Good question. Tape Trains are sets of HQ tapes that are put together by individual members of the NJTA.

The trains are sent around in resealable packages to a list of "passengers" who sign up in advance to receive them. Once a train has been delivered it is the passenger's responsibility to make their copies and send the masters back out to the next person via priority mail ASAP. Pre-printed address labels are included in every train so you're able to peel off the next sticker in line and place it over yours before sending it on down the line.

Starting this New Year, trains will be run a little differently...hopefully to the liking of all involved. One, if a train has seven or more people signing up for it, in most instances two tracks will be run. If it is anticipated that a train will be a popular one (i.e. Phish's Holiday run), the originator may be asked to spin two copies. Or, if more people sign up for a train than anticipated, a copy may be made on my deck...this will make one track with tapes one generation higher, but the difference will be negligible. Two, cabooses will be asked to send blanks to the originator when the mailing list is announced, not when they actually receive the tapes. Hopefully expediting the reimbursment of the originator with blanks will encourage the originator to spin more HQ shows for everyone. Anyone have any comments/objections/suggestions for this new operation?

There are many advantages to Tape Trains:
1) All the passengers on the list are able to use their own dubbing set-up to spin their copies from the masters.
2) The master tapes travel from passenger to passenger so that everyone on the track gets the same GEN.
3) You can critique the quality of the recordings before investing in the blanks it takes to copy them. If you decide not to $pin the show your costs are limited to "one way" postage.
