In the afternoon of Day 2, we drove up past La Veta and into the Cuchara
Valley. This is where we went skiing the last time we were here. But this
was April, and although there was some snow, not enough for skiing. Not
that I minded. Skiing is not for me. |
We followed the Cuchara river as far as we could without getting stuck
in the mud/snow. |
There were still patches of snow up here, but the temperature was in the
high sixties. |
Snow was especially deep on the north side of the hills where the sun
couldn't reach it. |

We had heard there were interesting rock formations down this road, but
it wasn't open. |
From Hwy 12 we could see these great rock walls. Volcanic intrusions of
basalt that are harder than the surrounding rock, so they weather at a different
rate. |

Did you know you can't stand on top of snow like this? I sank knee deep
into the snow. |
