Goldeneye 64

Goldeneye 64

Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64 is one of this decade's top action games with its intense 3D play and extraordinary graphics. It has won numerous awards for graphics, play, and storyline. Unlike any other shoot-em'-up, Goldeneye 64 is incredibly realistic and has definite mission objectives. The multi-player aspect, however, is the real thing that has people playing Goldeneye over and over again.

Development

The development of Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64 was done with close contact with the movie studio that produced the movie. Incidentally, the production of the game and the movie were ocurring at the same time. Photos were collected from the set of the film to use to model the game after. This added an authentic flavor to the game. Quality here is excellent.

Once the development team had all the photos, blueprints and diagrams they needed, the next step was to make the wire-frame models of most everything they were going to use in the game. SGI computers were used as well as Nintendo's own NINGEN software to create the wire models.

Example:

Once the wireframe models were created, the texture was filled in to finish off the scene. Digital photos were also used to create textures for the objects. Unlike the movie set, the virtual set was edited for good game play. Enemies were added in different places and authenticity and quality were at a maximum stress here. Then, the technical job of making the game engine and other incredibly complex factors finished off the game.

Multi-Player

One of the more exciting aspects of Goldeneye is a multi-player function which allows up to 4 players to shoot it out amongst each other. Different primary weapons can be selected including automatics, pistols, power weapons, sniper rifles, grenade launchers, and several types of mines. There are up to 11 different arenas to play multi-player, some from the missions and others custom made for specific multi-player play. Like said before, some arenas cannot be aquired until specific missions are beat on specific difficulty levels. In either case, the levels are all very dynamic and fun to play in with several levels, dark corridors, and open areas for real nice gunfights.
