'Gupt' is a fast paced murder mystery that revolves around the murder of a governor.
Saahil Sinha (Bobby Deol), a typical college going kid, can't get along & relate to his step father, the governor (Raj Babbar).
When the governor arranges Saahil's marriage with his friend's daughter, Sheetal (Manisha Koirala) Saahil is annoyed and angry as he is in love with
his childhood sweetheart Isha (Kajol). At the engagement party, he has an ugly arguement with his father, and obviosly when the
governor is murdered that very night, the blame falls on Saahil's shoulders.
He is arrested and even his mother (Priya Tendulkar) thinks that he is guilty. The only person who stands by him is Sheetal...but
the real question is who is the killer...?
Verdict
'Gupt' is a well made film with strong performances from most of the cast - especially Kajol. Manisha is wasted as the teenage bimbette - after
'Khamoshi' & 'Agnisakshi' one is disappointed to see her in such a role - her role had a lot more scope but sadly the circumstances
in the movie don't give her a chance.
But besides that, as the film progresses the viewer
is left wondering who the real killer is. The finale is the best part of the film, as the identity of the killer is a huge surprise.
Technically the film is also great, it's very polished. The music is superb with most of the numbers
already being chart toppers.
My only criticism was that albeit the killer being a surprise, it was slightly unbelievable. All said and done though
'Gupt' is one of the better murder mysteries that Bollywood has come
up with in the recent years, not taking into account the waste
of an actress of Manisha's calibre...
