THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY: Douglas Adams
This is for the benefit of the people who like the quotes that display on my main homepage.

Don't Panic! If you have never read Douglas Adams you've led a sad sad life!! I'm ashamed to admit that the only one of his works that I've managed to get hold of and read is The HitchHiker's Guide To The Galaxy series (But I have read it 4 times now!!) And if I ever see anything else by him in a library or book club or whatever I will be sure to get hold of it.

Anyway you should've at least heard of The HitchHikers Guide To The Galaxy - it's pretty famous. It started out as a BBC radio show in England (this was yonks ago). Then the books were written and the BBC even made a movie. (I also just recently found out that they're making a new Hitchhiker's movie right now!! It's due for release in 2005 - can't wait!)

Anyway, the 5 books in the series are:

  • The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
One Thursday lunchtime the Earth is unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be more than he can cope with. Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun, and the galaxy is a very strange and startling place.

  • The Restaurant at the End Of the Universe
Facing annihilation at the hands of the warlike Vogons is a curious time to have a cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his curious comrades in arms as they hurtle through space powered by pure improbability - and desperately in search of a place to eat.

  • Life, the Universe, and Everything
The unhappy inhabitants of the planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky above their heads - so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now only five individuals stand between the killer robots of Krikkit and their goals of annihilation...

  • So Long, and Thanks for All the fish
Left at the end of LIFE, THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING with the address for God's Final Message To His Creation, Arthur Dent let this crucial information slip his mind.

  • Mostly Harmless
It's easy to become disheartened when your planet has been demolished for an unnecessary hyperspacial express route, the woman you love has vanished in a misunderstanding about the nature of space/time, the spaceship in which you are travelling crashed in flames on a remote and Bob-fearing planet, and all you have to fall back on are a few sandwich-making skills.
It originally started off as a trilogy but grew to include the last two books as well. Anyway, in case you're wondering what they're like - they are the most hilarious things you'll ever read! The first 3 especially. I guess they'd be categorised as sci-fi but they're not really all spacey and stuff. (I mean I don't really enjoy hectic sci-fi stuff, I'm more into supernatural stuff) You'll like these even if you usually hate sci-fi stuff - You have to have a sense of humour though or don't bother ;-). Douglas Adams just has the most absurd way of writing, he can make anything funny. Just read some of the quotes here to see what I'm talking about! When asked "What made you write a trilogy in four (and later five) parts?", Douglas Adams replied, "A poor grasp of arithmetic". (That gives you some idea of the kind of writer he was.)
