NOTE: IT IS BEST TO VIEW THESE IMAGES AT 16K COLORS OR HIGHER
Here are a few attempts to photograph the moon. The first shot, with the 3X Lenmar, was taken before dusk while the sky was still very bright. I tried to take shots later but even with with using the full 2 brackets of underexposure and spot metering allowed by the Coolpix the moon was totally washed out. This is where a manual exposure option would really help out. The second shot was taken later at night when the sky was pretty dark. The metering probably worked on this shot because the moon was larger at this magnification and effected the metering more. The shots were taken handheld with the camera held in my lap (this is where lens swivel feature comes in handy.)
Taken with Lenmar 3X lens in front of 3X optical zoom for a 35mm equivalent 345mm focal length or approximately 7 times magnification. Shutter speed 1/118s, aperature = f9.9
Taken with 8X monocular in front of 3X optical zoom for a 35mm equivalent 920mm focal length or approximately 18 times magnification. Shutter speed = 1/21, aperature = f3.6
These shots have been cropped from 1280x960 original pics (lots of black space removed.) Otherwise they are exactly as taken. I'm going to attempt a shot through my 8" SCT telescope when it arrives.
...and to show you what really can be done. Bryan Biggers Bryan Biggers snapped this shot of the moon with his Coolpix through the eyepiece of his Meade ETX scope. Pretty impressive.
Taken with Meade ETX Telescope at 48x + 3X Nikon optical for a 35mm equivalent 5520mm focal length or approximately 110 times magnification. Shutter speed = 1/6, aperature = f3.6
