It appears that the Frostburg State University swim team is finally making a name for itself, after several years of disappointing seasons. An effort to recruit incoming freshman swimmers has paid off greatly; only three students were turned away for confusing the swim team with "a really wet frat party." There are also many swimmers who have returned from last year, giving the team a good mix of veterans and rookies. The Frostburg women's swim team has often been outnumbered, but has shown great improvement, and even won four meets. It is believed they were won due to the women's efforts to "psyche out" the other team by yelling confusing cheers, wherein no one said the correct words. They gave up on this tactic later in the season, however, and began to use a normal cheer that everyone agreed upon. They even started winning races, which apparently also helped. Said head coach Chip Villarreal: "We're starting to win races, which is helping." In the future, the Bobcats hope to win many more races, and improve their record drastically, maybe even winning five meets next season. The men, on the other hand, have used their gift of annoyance to win meets. They simply annoyed the other teams to distract them, then swam to victory. However, this did not work against the team from Grove City College, who were merely confused. Neither did this work toward the women from the College of Notre Dame, who were heard saying "Dumb boys." The fact that the men were not actually swimming against Notre Dame might also have contributed to the loss. Overall, the 2000-2001 swim season was a great success over past years. The roster has grown considerably, and the camaraderie among team members is great. Many a night, swimmers gather off-campus to drink tea and relax, reflecting on past and future performances. They usually get to bed early, in preparation for practice the next morning, and are always on time and ready to swim every day. Coach Chip has even said he is impressed at the dedication the team has shown, and encourages gatherings outside of swimming to strengthen interpersonal relationships. In an effort to do just that, and get some training too, the Bobcats journeyed to Savannah, Georgia. There they trained twice a day at the local aquatic center, swimming in an Olympic-sized pool. The team was defeated in a mock meet against the local Masters team, but made themselves feel better later by making the other team cry. Shouts of "Ha-ha, those 11-year-olds aren't all that!" could be heard throughout the aquatic center. Down time during the trip was rare, but site-seeing trips to downtown Savannah and Beaufort, South Carolina made the days more interesting. The team spent nights watching TV, eating, and being sick. The last night of the trip was reserved for exchanging gag gifts. Coach Chip was given a thong, which he has said will "come in handy on certain occasions." He was not asked to elaborate on that. The season was topped off at the Gove City College Invitational, featuring the PAC and Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Championship. The Bobcats were victorious in the AMCC, defeating four other teams for the title. Coach Chip also came out a winner, being honored as Coach of the Year for both the men and women's teams. Individually, each swimmer saw his share of the awards podium, and no one fell off it during the presentation. Bets were made (and lost), races were swum well, and everyone had a great time. Overall, it has been a successful season for the entire team. Many personal and team records were set, and everyone is looking forward to continuing this trend next year. |
