What's new with 5-7-9?...Dominique!!!!!!!!

What does Olympic Gold Medalist Dominique Moceanu and 5-7-9 have in common?... They are both champions! Keep checking out your local 5-7-9 and watch for Dominique. You never know if she'll be in your town next!

5-7-9 caught up with Dominique in her new gym in Houston, TX for a quick interview. Here's how it went...

Q. Why are you excited about representing 5-7-9?

A. Clothes and shopping are two of my favorite things. It makes sense that I would represent a store like 5-7-9 because I've shopped there for a long time. The clothes are so cool, and they fit me! I wear a size 0. (But sometimes the pants are too long, and I have to roll them at the waist.) I had a lot of fun modeling in my first 5-7-9 photo shoot, but it's going to be weird seeing pictures of myself in the store window when I go there. I'll be thinking, "Hey, I know her!"

Q. What will you do for 5-7-9?

A. I'll be photographed in 5-7-9 clothes for posters each season and appear in 5-7-9 music videos. I'll make appearances at several stores, which will be fun because I love meeting my fans.

Q. What's your schedule like?

A. Right now it's pretty crazy because I just moved back to Texas from Boston, where I was training for 2 months. My coach Bela Karolyi retired, so I needed a new coach and a place to work out until the gym opened.
[Dominique's new gym has a capacity for 2 000 people.]
I'm happy to be home! I'm in the gym about 6 hours a day, either size or seven days a week depending on what I'm training for. For my summer schedule, I get to the gym at about 9 A.m., work out for 3 hours and go home and rest. Then I'm back in the gym from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. During the school year, I study with a private tutor between workout sessions.

Q. What do you think accounts for your success in gymnastics?

A. The same reasons people succeed in anything they do - determination, commitment and discipline. What keeps me going is always looking forward to what I think is the best part: competition. I love the feeling I get when I know I've really nailed a routine in a competition and performed well. It's exciting when the crowd gets worked up. The atmosphere is amazing. All my hard work pays off.

Q. Was it fun being with all the girls on the 1996 U.S. women's gymnastics team?

A. It was a lot of fun, especially since we won the team gold medal for the first time. It meant a lot to all of us. We celebrated by going to the mall and having a contest to see who could spend the most money! I bought purses, shoes, and clothes. Now everyone from the team is all over the country, but we keep in touch by e-mail. We have private addresses because if we didn't, there wouldn't be enough time to answer all the e-mails from the fans!

Q. What's next on your agenda?

A. I'm excited about the new gym opening, and I'm totally psyched to get my driver's license. I'm going to try to get it early, and I've alreay bought a truck.
Now I'm trainig for the nationals in August and the Worlds in September. After that, I go on a 54-city tour with the John Hancock Gymnastics Exposition. Of course, I'm always training for the 2000 Olympics, too.

A Gymnast's Resume

Dominique's career track is long for someone who's only 15 years old. Here's the quick version of how she got to be one of the top female gymnasts in the world:
-Dominique started gymnastics with the right genes: Her parents, (Dimitry and Camelia), were elite gymnasts in their native country, Romania, before the moved to the U.S.
-When Dominique was 3 years old, her parents enrolled her in gymnastics class. At 10, she and her family moved to Houston, TX, from Tampa, FL, so she could train with Bela Karolyi, a romanian coach who trained Olympic gold medalists Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton.
-Since her first major competition in 1992, Dominique has been winning medals, which she keeps in her room on the wall. Among her awards and titles, Dominique can say she's:
  • a member of the first U.S. Olympic women's gymnastics team to win a gold medal (Atlanta 1996).
  • the youngest female - in any sport - to win an Olympic gold medal. (Dominique was 14. She'll always have this title because 16 is now the minimum age to compete in the Olympics.)
  • Ranked fifth all-around in the World championships in 1995.
  • The youngest gymnast to win the U.S. Junior National Championships title (1994) and Senior National Championship title (1995).
  • The youngest gymnast to compete internationally. Dominique was 10 when she won a gold medal for floor excercise in the Pan-American games in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
