As you can see, this is a truly star-studded cast. These are some of the most popular and talanted stars and character actors of the day. The picture's directing and producing credits are nothing to bat an eyelash at either: John Cromwell and David O. Selznick. The picture is in black and white and photographed beautifully. The costumes and sets were elaborate and detailed to the extent of the viewer forgetting that the picture was in black and white. Some scenes, in particular the coronation and ball scenes, make movies of today look cheap. Furthermore, while overlooked by the AFI in the June of '98, many will agree after seeing this film that it truly was one of the best movies of all time. By clicking on the above links, you can view the filmographies of the stars of The Prisoner of Zenda. Each had a well-rounded career and plenty of adulation from fans, though through the years, the names haven't aged well. Few can recall most of the actors that make up the cast list here. The movie itself has become more of an obscurity as well. But if you dig under all the video collections with names that never age, like Gable, Dietrich, Davis, Cooper, and Chaplin, you'll be able to find this rare, and very watchable gem on video for rent or sale.
