Dawson Leery is the main character, an aspiring filmmaker who is extremely intelligent for his age, seems to live a perfect life, and idolises Steven Spielberg.
Joey is the poor-unfortunate-wrong-side-of-the-tracks-tomboy who dosen't get any breaks. Her mother died of cancer and her father is in prison, and now she is living with her sister Bessie and Bessie's boyfriend Body, and their new born baby. Joey and Dawson have been best friends since childhood, she tumbled in love with Dawsonand was frustrated that he didn't realize it. But once they started dating, she found it awkward and difficult to get along with Dawson, and found it best to end it before more people got hurt, but they fell right back into their relationship at the wedding.
