"I'm God's Lonely Man" Vietnam Vet Travis Bickle is 26, a loner in the mean streets of New York City, slipping slowly into isolation and violent tendencies. In solving his insomnia by driving a yellow cab on the night shift, he grows increasingly disgusted by the low-lives that hang out at night. We see many lowlifes, not only in the form of the street holdlums, but also his cab fare. His touching attempts to woo Betsy, a Senator's campaign worker, turn sour when he takes her to a porn movie on their first date. He even fails in his attempt to persuade child and prostitute Iris to desert her pimp Sport and return to her parents and school.
Knowing that the streets are no longer safe, he buys four handguns and sets out to cleanse the filth he lives in. Having committed a murder in self-defense with an unlicensed gun,it seems inevitable that soom he will commit an extremely violent act. Sporting his famous mohawk look, he plans to assassinate the Senator, and the climax of the film is truely spectacular, filled with violence, yet also it envokes a type of decency in the lone Taxi Driver.
