BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID

by William Goldman

EXT. Hillside - Day

BUTCH CASSIDY and the SUNDANCE KID come rushing over a hillside, only steps ahead of a persistent posse. They find that they're at the edge of a cliff that drops hundreds of feet down into a raging river. They're trapped!

They press themselves against the ledge, crouching down and surveying the situation.

BUTCH. I figure we can fight or we can give. If we give, we go to jail.

SUNDANCE. I been there already.

BUTCH. If we fight, they can stay right where they are and starve us out. Or they could go for position and shoot us. Or they could start a rock slide and get us that way. What else could they do?

SUNDANCE. They could surrender to us, but I wouldn't count on that.

They watch for a moment as the posse breaks up and starts to take up positions on the rocks above them.

SUNDANCE. They're going for positions all right. Better get ready.

Sundance begins loading up his six-shooter. Butch has a forlorne look.

BUTCH. Kid, next time I say "Let's go someplace like Bolivia," let's go someplace like Bolivia.

SUNDANCE. Next time.

Sundance looks up with steely determination, ready for the inevitable shoot-out. Butch looks out over the cliff edge. Suddenly, his face lights up.

SUNDANCE. Ready?

BUTCH. No. We'll jump.

Sundance looks down the cliff. The drop is certain death.

SUNDANCE. Like hell we will.

BUTCH. No, it'll be okay, as long as it's deep enough, we don't get squished to death. They'll never follow us.

SUNDANCE. How do you know?

BUTCH. Would you make a jump like that if you didn't have to?

SUNDANCE. I have to and I'm not gonna.

BUTCH. Well, you have to, otherwise we're dead. They'll just have to go back down the way they came. Come on.

SUNDANCE. Just one clear shot, that's all I want.

BUTCH. Come on.

SUNDANCE. No.

BUTCH. We got to.

SUNDANCE. No.

BUTCH. Yes.

SUNDANCE. Get away from me.

BUTCH. Why?

SUNDANCE. I wanna fight 'em.

BUTCH. They'll kill us.

SUNDANCE. Maybe.

BUTCH. You wanna die?

SUNDANCE. (indicating the cliff) Do you?

BUTCH. I'll jump first.

SUNDANCE. No.

BUTCH. Okay, you jump first.

SUNDANCE. No, I said!

BUTCH. What's the matter with you?

SUNDANCE. I CAN'T SWIM!!

Butch just stares for a moment. Sundance nods as if to say 'There you are.' Butch starts to laugh uproariously.

BUTCH. Why, you fool, the fall'll probably kill ya'.

Sundance considers that twisted logic for a moment. He takes hold of one end of Butch's gun belt, Butch takes hold of the other. With a deep breath and a burst of determination, they jump to their feet and run off the side of the cliff, plummeting into the river below.

BUTCH and SUNDANCE. Oh shiiiiiiiii-

They land with a loud splash, and ride the raging river to safety.
