Interview with Joshua

Source: YM (September 1998)

YM - What's with the blond hair?

Josh - I bleached it for a Scream-style horror film I'm in called Urban Legends. But I don't want to do it again, because it took six hours and it hurt! It actually made my head bleed. I had huge scabs on my scalp for days afterward. It was thoroughly unpleasant.

YM - We hear you've met Leonardo DiCaprio.

Josh - I met him briefly, before he was the biggest star in the world. When I told my sister, she went out of her mind. I'd never even seen his movies, so I said something like, "I met this guy who was in The Basketball Diaries," and she just started screamingher head off. Once she told all of her friends, I became the most popular kid on the block. Not because I'd accomplished anything, but because I'd spoken to Leonardo DiCaprio face-to-face.

YM - Right, like you've never crushed on a movie star?

Josh - Oh sure. Halle Berry is fantastically beautiful, and I think Uma Thurman is one of God's creatures, she is such a beautiful woman. She's unbelievable-tall and statuesque.

YM - Have you ever met her?

Josh - No. But if I did, I'd get really quiet. I know that if I opened my mouth, I'd say something stupid. It's the same way when I meet hockey players. I can't talk around them, 'cause growing up, they were my heroes.

YM - If you could be known for one thing, what would it be?

Josh - Just being a good human being. It's terribly hard to be. I think it's something everybody strives for their entire lives.

YM - Now that you're a blond, do you like blond girls?

Josh - I like blond girls. I like brunette girls, too. I'm a fan of women; hair color is negotiable.

YM - Okay, so what's your dream girl like?

Josh - Somebody who returns my phone calls! I'm pretty fond of the woman in my life, so she is my current dream girl.

YM - Can you describe her?

Josh - Nope.

YM - Are you willing to tell us who she is?

Josh - Nope.

YM - Got a favorite band?

Josh - Rappers like Gang Starr or Common Sense. Guru, who raps for Gang Starr, is probably the most intelligent man in the business. I enjoy listening to someone who has something to say. It's just good, palatable music.

YM - It's funny, 'cause James Van Der Beek says that he likes the Dave Matthews Band, definitely a far cry from rap. So when you're taping Dawson's Creek in North Carolina for nine months, do you ever fight over music?

Josh - No problem. I own the stereo.
