Kristen Alderson isn't a brat, but she most definitely plays one on TV. For the last three years, Alderson has brought One Life to Live's resident bad seed Starr Manning to life in a most entertaining, lively way. Not only does Alderson play the daughter of Todd and Blair, arguably Llanview's worst parents, but Starr's behavior sometimes makes them look downright saintly. Well, almost. Unlike her alter ego, "I'm not a show-off kind of girl," Alderson states matter-of-factly. Prior to landing her OLTL role in 1998, Alderson's only other professional acting experience was in a national touring production of Annie. She toured the country playing orphan Molly for two years before auditioning for the role of Starr. Alderson, who turns 10 in May, commutes to New York from Pennsylvania, where she lives with her parents and brother, Eddie, 6. When she has more than a couple of days at OLTL, she and her family stay in New York. Alderson leads a normal life, playing with her brother, practicing ballet, tap and jazz, and swimming. As for the character she plays, "Starr is a nasty brat," Alderson declares. "She bribes people a lot. And she blackmails a lot of people." This week, Starr swipes Max's credit card. "I order toys, and I order someone to throw a pie in Max's face." The young actress can understand Starr's behavior. "She's like a double of Todd and Blair. She's both of them put together, which is really bad. Blair is always telling Todd to set a good example for Starr, but she's not setting a good example for Starr either. Starr doesn't give up until she gets what she wants." Alderson has picked up pointers from her on-screen elders. She picked up an especially nifty -- and annoying -- trick from Roger Howarth. "Roger can be difficult because he changes his lines," she reveals. "You get so confused. So sometimes I can ad-lib. Sometimes I can say stuff that other kids would really say. I don't add in a lot. I do it during rehearsal to make sure [it's] OK." Alderson is happy at OLTL, and "would love to stay here. My mom said don't be too sure, because you could be a baby one second and a teen-ager another. That's soap operas."
