Art of Success

[Tim Curry]

Writer: Nick Dear

Director: Adrian Noble

Synopsis:

Opened Dec. 5, 1989 at the Manhattan Theatre Club
went 71 performances to Feb. 4, 1990

The action revolves around artist William Hogarth and takes place in
England. The play condenses the years 1727-1737 into a single night.

(Borrowed from 'The Nation' Feb. 19, 1990)
Tim Curry, in the role of Hogarth, comes across as an abrasive,
abusive MCP to whom artistic genius has been granted by pure
accident. The main action of the play is to bring him into
confrontation with the three women he has chiefly wronged:
his wife, played by Mary-Louise Parker; his favorite whore,
played by Suzanne Bertish; and an escaped murderess, played
by Jayne Atkinson who wants to retrieve the sketch he's made
because it misrepresents her.
