This was the 1988 national tour of Me and My Girl.
Mr. Curry and Co. did 10 cities in 6 months,
including LA, Denver, St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago
Cleveland, Dallas, Wash DC, Pittsburg (hello Betty),
and Cincinnati.
A revived 1937 musical comedy. Revived? It has the oldest,
corniest jokes imaginable. "Do you know my daughter, May?"
"No, but thanks for the tip." Or, how 'bout this, done with a
very British accent: "This is bean soup" "I don't care what it's
been, what is it now?"
If you have been reading this page for long, you know I love
humor from the left field. How I wish I had seen this show!
I can't think of anyone more perfect for left field humor than
Tim Curry.
Bill Snibson is a cockney 'lad' who discovers he is in line for
British nobility. His fancy relatives try to spruce him up a bit
to fit his new place in life, including getting rid of his cockney
girlfriend. This all leads to much song and tap dancing. Mr. Curry
does a scene with a 30 foot, red, 'vermin' lined cape.
Review of Tim, borrowed from the Detroit Free Press: "Curry's
performance sometimes verges on Groucho Marxism. He duckwalks,
imitates Al Jolson, wrestles a tiger rug, pulls his derby down
over his ears, pops his eyes, bucks his teeth and casually tries
every sight joke except putting a cigaret up one nostril. ... He
also has a hilarious, impromptu-looking moment with a sofa pillow."
