A body is found in the bay; Bolander and Munch are assigned to the case. Upon returning
to the squadroom, Lewis is called into Giardello's office, where he gets the shock of his
life; the body is none other than Steve Crosetti, his partner. Worse
than that, Bolander and Munch say that it looks like a suicide; Lewis says that it can't be,
because Crosetti believed in God. Giardello lists Crosetti's status as "wrongful death" and
his name goes up on the Board, against Bolander's wishes. Stan
asks Meldrick if there was anything in Crosetti's life he was very upset
about; Meldrick remembers that Crosetti was depressed about a case where a boy was hanged by his mother, but refuses to
even think that his partner had killed himself over that.
The departmental brass informs Giardello that Crosetti was the fourth Baltimore Police death in 10
months, and tells him that if the cause of death comes back as suicide, Steve
will have no honor guard. Outraged, Giardello tries to talk to the deputy commissioner in hopes of
securing an honor guard, but is all but ignored.
Crosetti's daughter, who last had contact with him a month before, visits the squadroom. Lewis presents to Felton his idea that Crosetti
died by a convict's retribution, but Beau laughs it off. Later in the day, Lewis begs Felton
and Munch to find out Bolander's agenda. When Stan tries to talk to Beatrice, Meldrick immediately comes between them.
Bayliss and Munch visit Bernard, John's brother and a mortician, where
John uses his brotherly will to get Crosetti a high-quality coffin for less. Bolander continues
to question Crosetti's friends and associates, including Chris Thormann, who tells Bolander
that Lewis had gotten to everyone first and asked them not to talk with Stan. Back at the
squadroom, Bolander angrily tells Lewis that influencing witnesses was not going to change
anything, and that Lewis was a bad partner because he had no clue about Crosetti's mental
state. The call from the ME's comes in and reveals that it was a suicide; unable to
hold in the pain any longer, Lewis breaks down weeping.
The day of the funeral arrives and Frank
refuses to go to the requiem mass, which earns him much harassment from the squad. When the funeral
is over, the procession moves to the stationhouse and is surprised to see Frank
Pembleton standing at the entrance in his honor guard uniform, in direct defiance of departmental orders; as the body moves past him,
Frank stands at attention, and gives a fallen comrade one final, silent farewell salute.
