Everyone in the squad notices Felton looking worse and worse with each passing day; Howard
defends her partner, saying that losing a spouse and kids would be traumatic to anyone. Giardello comes out of his office and assigns each of Crosetti's five open cases to a
detective, at the protest of Lewis, who wants all of them. Howard, the detective with
the best clearance rate, receives Crosetti's toughest case, the whodunit murder of Erica
Chilton.
Munch, Bayliss and Lewis are discussing what kind of food should be served at their new
bar when the phone rings; it's the bank calling them down. The three
detectives rush down to Hinks Bank expecting bad news, but they don't get any; their
representative tells them that their consolidated checking account had been approved.
Erica Chilton was found suffocated and half-naked by her six-year old daughter.  Her boyfriend, Tom Marans, had been at work when the killing occurred; according to Lewis,
he seemed devastated when he found out. Nevertheless, Howard names him as the primary
suspect and takes a few shots at Crosetti, who she thought was sloppy with the casefile;
Lewis angrily tells Howard that Crosetti did all that he could. Kay and Beau interview
Marans, who gives them some recently unearthed letters from Chilton's old boyfriend; maybe
he killed him, Marans says. Later during the shift, Felton receives a call from Beth,
who tells him that while she may have been thinking about reconciliation, the desire was
gone now. Felton leaves to drown his sorrows in liquor and ends up losing the letters.
Russert takes Giardello out to lunch and introduces him to her friend Amanda, whom
Giardello takes an immediate liking to. Gee carries on a conversation with Amanda, telling
her personal things; it is apparent he thinks there is chemistry between them. Russert
talks to Amanda later and asks what she thought of Gee; she answers that she is not ready
for a relationship. Russert breaks the news to Giardello, who takes it badly; he thinks
that she is not interested in him because he is too black. Russert tells him that his
suspicions are false, but Giardello refuses to believe otherwise, saying that it has
happened to him so many times before.
Munch, Lewis and Bayliss are now incorporated and ready to take ownership of the
Waterfront, but run into a few snags when the find out about extra and hidden costs
(dramshop insurance and incidentals) that are to be paid. Before long they are
fresh out of money and beer, the latter having been taken by the former owner, who says
that the transfer of liquor from one owner to another is prohibited.
Giardello, his frustration rising with the assigning of Crosetti's old cases and his
rejection from Amanda, goes on a chair-tossing rampage in the squadroom. Bolander,
genuinely worried, tries to find out what is wrong through talking over dinner. Giardello
thinks about fond memories of his wife and of how Crosetti was so alone in his last days,
and he tells Stan that he doesn't want to be alone anymore.
Howard, very upset at Beau for losing the letters, tells him to take a hike. Bolander
suggests Chilton's ex-husband did it so that he could have the child, but Howard tells
him his alibi checked out. Pembleton earlier had told her that a little red under her
name was not going to make her any less of a detective, and as she watches Pembleton
close the Crosetti case he was assigned, she realizes that maybe this case was meant to
be unsolved and that she must accept it for what it is. When the phone rings, she picks
it up this time. Beau, worried that he'll never see the letters or his children again, visits Megan at
home and asks if he could spend the night on her sofa. Megan, empathizing with Beau's
situation, allows him to stay. |
